star rating colours...

ok, i have this star next to my name, i klnow it is some kind of rating and all and i even sort of understand how the system works (people rate your posts either good or bad, this in turn gives your star a colour and number), but what do the colours signify?
i mean i have had my star be red and a goldy yellow colour, i think even once it was blue or something. what does the colour change mean, and which colour is best to have?

The stars are as important as the stars you got on your school work at kindergarten.
They have absolutely no effect on your earning power but have a lot of effect in making some people post more quality contributions which is good.
No idea about the colour - it is just pretty. haha
