a friend offered me her ferret as she does not want the responsibility anymore. i would love to have it but dont know anything about them. i was wondering if there is anything i should know before agreeing to take it. i have three kids, 13,7,8. are they ok for kids? how do i take care of it? is there any special things i should know? are they prone to any disease? thanks for any help!

ferrets are great! they are kind of high maintenace..and a little stinky...but so cute and fun! ferrets can be expensive if you dont get creative, but there are cheap ways to entertain...i took old pants and cut off the legs, sewed them all together, and made a rather elaborate tunnel system for their cage and they loved playing and napping in it. ferrets are easier when you have two, since they play with each other...when i had just one it always wanted to play with ME, but she was an unsually social girl, too. anyway, make sure you get a pretty big cage, even if its only one animal. when you are gone all day, hes gonna need some room to play. try to make a varied enviornment of hammocks, stuff to burrow in (i used washcloths as they are easy to throw in the wash and you dont have to keep buying stuff), tunnels, and stuff to climb. my ferrets liked doggie squeaky toys, cat balls with the bells in them, plastic bags, and really anything that made noise when they played with it. as long as hes had his shots, you shouldnt worry about diseases. ferrets are prone to tumors, though, so dont skip vet checkups.

Ferrets make great pets. They need a decent sized cage to live in. They love human contact and are usually good with children. Yours are older and know not to poke it, or pinch it, or pull its hair!! They can be litter trained just like a cat. You put a litter box in there cage and they will get the point. They are pretty easy to care for. They do need the ocasional bath, and cage cleaned once a day {to keep down smell}. Other than that give lots of love and affection. Give them toys to play with to keep them occupied. They are very full of energy but so much fun!!! Good luck!!
