where are the TRUE "superstars"?????

Prince. Michael Jackson. Madonna. I was born in the 70's, but my more VIVID memories of music are from the 80's, when these 3 ICONS of pop music reigned supreme! Prince was, and still IS, my favorite artist of ALL-TIME! Who else is so VERSATILE? He can play funk, soul, r & b, pop, jazz, classical,...basically, anything he wants 2! I can't think of another artist who has such a DIVERSE body of work as HE does! A true inspiration! And even 2-DAY, all 3 of these artists can STILL fill up an arena or stadium, on THEIR name ALONE, and it will STILL SELL OUT, even faster than 2-day's CURRENT artists! Since I love r & b music (though I love a VARIETY of genres), when I look at the "superstars" of 2-day (like R.Kelly and Usher), while I DO like their music (I lean more in the R.Kelly direction, though), these 2 DON'T have that same "magic" that Prince and Michael had "back in the day"! I use the examples of R.Kelly and Usher, because R.Kelly is a self-contained, multi-instrumentalist (like Prince), and Usher is a dance artist (like Michael), and currently, these 2 ARE the 2 biggest r & b, solo male artists, that are out there. But, as much as I appreciate their talent, I still DON'T get that same feeling I USED 2 get, when, say, the Thriller video would come on, or when I saw Prince's "Purple Rain" concert, or "LoveSexy" tour. And, 4 as "big" as R.Kelly and Usher are, they STILL CANNOT sell out a stadium, with ONLY THEIR NAMES on the "bill"! They will STILL need 2-3 (and sometimes, MORE than that) OPENING acts! I'm not pointing this out as an insult 2 them, because, as I said, I DO like their music. I'm just acknowledging the FACT that the "superstars" of 2-DAY DON'T seem 2 generate that same level of EXCITEMENT that the superstars of YESTERDAY did, and still DO! And, this is probably true 4 ALL music genres! When I look at Britney Spears, 4 as "huge" as she is, she STILL is no MADONNA! In the end, I guess there's really NO COMPARISON! The "stars" of 2-day simply DON'T measure up! I think that the artists of "yesterday" just had, and HAVE, more of a genuine LOVE 4 music, in general! I think SOME artists 2-day DO love it, but overall, I think the emphasis is more on making MONEY, more so than churning out QUALITY material! And, maybe it's just an indescribable "it" factor, which, some artists 2-day DO have, I feel, but NOT on the same level as the OLDER artists I've mentioned here! Maybe THOSE types of artists (Prince, Michael, Madonna) only come along ONCE every 50 or 100 years! What do U think? Do the "superstars" of 2-DAY have the same EFFECT on u as the 1's of the PAST? Is it unfair 2 COMpare? Do u like 2-day's artists BETTER? Let me in on your thoughts.

Who could forget such performers and groups as Daryl Hall & John Oates, Men At Work, Foreigner, Whitney Houston, Atlantic Starr, Falco, Culture Club, Phil Collins, Cyndi Lauper, Bruce Springsteen, Starship, Wang Chung, Cutting Crew, The Eurythmics and Night Ranger. Their music shaped our life and our heart. Today's music does not measure up by a long shot. I'm an 80's girl and I always will be.

I feel u, Swtrose. I actually liked MANY of the 1's u named! In addition, I loved Duran Duran, The Police, Sting, Tears 4 Fears, Wham!, George Michael, Kool And The Gang, Ready 4 The World, The Time, and many others that I can't think of now. In MY MIND, the BEST music was back then, and even some of the 70's as well!

I've read all the discussion posts..and I feel compelled to mention the following, who were always part of the movie soundtracks in the 80's! Loverboy, Styx, Air Supply, Journey, Foreigner, REO Speedwagon, Cheap Trick, and what about the "Hair bands" ??? Styper, Cinderella, Quiet Riot, Ratt, and Van Halen? The bands of today just can't compete...because our music was the bomb!

I concur, carpenter5! Since I happen 2 enjoy a VARIETY of music, I also enjoyed some of the 1's u mentioned, like Van Halen, Foreigner, and REO Speedwagon! I personally think that the 80's had some of the BEST music EVER! Since MOST of my school days were during THAT decade, my FONDEST music memories are from that era as well! Thanks 4 your response!

Yes, RaayFa, there IS alot of competition out there. But, there's ALWAYS been ALOT of competition, during ANY era of music! Madonna had Cyndi Lauper. Britney Spears has Christina Aguilera. And, ALL genres of music have competition! So, I don't think that it's "competition" that's preventing true "stars" from being born. I just think that the "talent pool" is spiraling "down"! Simply put, 2-day's artists just AREN'T AS GOOD as their predecessors! It ALSO has 2 do with the changing "times". In 2-day's "microwave" society, EVERYTHING is more "fast-paced"! Movies don't stay in theatres long, unless they're MASSIVE hits. They're on DVD within 3 months after their THEATRICAL release! It USED 2 take a YEAR or so! With music, there's hardly any more ARTIST DEVELOPMENT! And, ever since MTV, BET, and VH-1 have come along, music is more about IMAGE, MORE than the actual music itself! Also, since many of us get our music ONLINE nowadays, less and less people are interested in buying the actual PHYSICAL CD's, and instead, are just downloading SINGLES, legally or ILLEGALLY! So, with THIS trend getting only BIGGER, AND the LACK of artist development, it's created a climate where it's just all about a "hot" SONG, NOT a "hot", or CAREER ARTIST! So, I feel like ALL of these things play a part. But, at the end of the day, I STILL say that the artists THEMSELVES are just of a LOWER caliber!

I must say I've never been that much of a fan of the ones you name, personally I think that's also what gets you to that viewpoint. Since in my opinion Madonna's music in example isn't that good at all, it can be better by far but she simply build up an entire image around herself as MTV and such came up. Same goes for Michael Jackson and Prince in example, wouldn't really say either of them are special as well. But myself I say similar things about the Beatles, Pink Floyd and the other great names from the sixties; whilst I know countless of people which would say they're not that special at all.

I respect your opinion, PsychoDude. U may NOT like the same music as I do, but at least u CAN relate 2 having those SAME FEELINGS about OTHER artists, like the 1's U mentioned. But, obviously, u and I seem 2 AGREE that the "best" music is from YEARS ago, NOT 2-day!
