I think it depends on the circumstances and the way the family is set up. If a family can't give an elderly person the type of medical care they need or can't afford to pay someone to come in to stay with the person, then they are best to look into a facility. I would do my best to care for my parents instead of having to put them in an elderly group home, but I don't think there is a wrong or right either way.

I won't give you a summary, but after dealing with my mother's terminal illness and having to be the 24/7 nurse in addition to having two kids and a husband, I take my hat off to the nursing facility. One person is not able to fully provide the care necessary for a terminally ill patient.
A reputable nursing home has staff to care for your loved one 24 hours a day 7 days a week.
