"Lost" season 3 is coming to its final episode. we finally have a clear view of the mysterious smoke monster. what do you think the smoke monster really is?
I think smoke monster is just a horrible thing in those losties' imagination. it does not exist, but this island have a mysterious power to bring some horrible thing in one's imagination to people, just like Locke found his father in this island, and so did Jack.
Ben told Locke that it's Locke himself who brought his father to this island. Locke had a bad experience with his father, and that experience affects Locke's life too much, so Locke can't escape from those bad memories. when he came to this island, he also brought this memeory to this island, and the island makes it be true. and maybe it's a test that Ben try to let Locke kill his father. if Locke does kill his father, it means Locke would recover from the hurt his father gave to him, and when it happens, Locke would become a special person in this island. I think that's the so called "right time" which Ben told Locke.
so I think the smoke monster is just a kind of fear in one's deep heart, and it would come to you in this island. but if you can beat this fear, the smoke monster would step back. I think it's why that priest(can't remember his name clearly, a black man, maybe called Ekoo?) dare to face smoke monster.
what do you think about that?
have a great day!

You've got a really interesting point there.. It could be their fear. Could it be Jacob? Honestly, I have no idea what that 'smoke monster' is.. And I never did get to figure out what it was.. I agree with you that Locke is special and he plays an important role in Lost!

ya, I do agree with you. it might be Jacob. Jacob is so mysterious that we have no idea about him though Lost has come to the end of season 3. I think Jacob has a kind of huge power, just like what happened when Ben took Locke to visit him.
Locke is really a special person. Maybe he is a replacer of Ben because he can communicate with the island, and he can also hear Jacob. Ben is jealous aobut Locke's potential, so he wanna kill Locke.
Lost is really a great show. but I think it would be better if the story can move on a little quickly.
have a great day!

Yup~! You could be right... Ben is just jealous and doesn't wanna lose his power as the 'leader' so he killed Locke! I can't wait to see what happens to Locke! Maybe the 'black smoke monster' is Jacob trapped in the form of 'smoke'.. That's why Locke heard him say "Help Me.." in the cabin.. Urghh.. I'm a mess just thinking of all these Lost theories.. hehe.. Well, we can all just sit and wait for the next season!! Great discussion here, maximus2006!!

At first I thought it was a Darhma experiment gone wrong. But upon seeing Ben's back episode, I think I may be wrong. "Smokie" tends to help people see images and memories: Kate's horse, Jack's dad. And when Ben was a young lad, he saw his mom. This being said, I think the smoke monster was there before Darhma. What it is, I'm not sure.

ya,I do agree with you. This island is very mysterious, and I think it's not Darhma experiment which makes it mysterious, and maybe just because of its special point, it was chosen as the base of Darhma experment.
I am not sure whether smoke monster helps people see images and memories, and it also might be the island or Jacob does that.
so many uncertainty in Lost. Great writers!

I'd go for the smoke monster being the demon of the Island who decides who will live or die based on its standards, not on whether the person passed a test or not. It might have got Boone killed because he was a good person and would have stood against him. Locke appears to be easily manipulated and easily duped. Eko was not a priest. He pretended to be one. However when he baptised Claire and Aaron, if you baptize in the name of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit (or Ghost) it counts. If Eko was a real priest, he probably would have survived and overcome the Island monster. I believe you have to go to a seminary and get training to be a Roman Catholic Priest and at least know Latin and Greek.

I think the smoke monster is the darkness that all humans have inside them.I think it is just darkness and can only hurt those that can relate to it.Those that stood up to it and didn't back down were not hurt and the smoke went away.It is an accumilation of the evils that a person has committed.

Wow, looks like you've had some great responses. All very good theories. I have another one to throw in. A long time ago, when the smoke monster grabbed Locke, it almost succeeded in taking him down a hatch. Since then, I've always thought a couple of things.
1. The smoke monster was engineered by Dharma as a security guard.
2. The smoke monster could be made of nano-bots, acting together as a whole. (Did anyone read Michael Crichton's "Prey"?)
I think Dharma may be responsible, but that something went wrong a long time ago. It seems they made that huge perimeter fence to keep "smokie" out.
Well, there's always something to think about in LOST. That's why it's so popular!

I think that the smoke monster is evil. Locke said it was the most beautiful thing he had ever seen and I think that he is evil so thus it would make sense. Eko shielded himself with prayer but lost to it in the end because he gave up after his brother basically said he would never be a real priest.
