Friends and Friendship

What is it about certain people that makes you call them friend? Has the term become o widely stretched that it's lost any special significance? I mean, calling a person you barely know "friend" is flattery and mere social lubrication, isn't it? I only really use the term when I think to myself -- "this person is my friend". And I take it to be a high evaluation of their character. Meaning I care about this person, I usually enjoy spending time with this person either face to face or over the phone or over the internet. So, wanting to talk to or connect with someone, I suppose, to be understood, to understand, to care for, and to be cared about by, another person is part of friendship.
What do you think friends and friendships are?
Cheers!
