Let me first say that I love that they changed the battle system. There was nothing more annoying to me than walling around and being blast by a mysterious pop-up battle. I love that now you can pick and choose your battles. Also, by seeing whats ahead you can prepare for what you will be facing. My biggest beef on the battle system though is being able to see whats going on. Depending on what your gambits are set to, your lead character drives the action. This is quite handy unless you are in close quarters (like a hallway) where the camera suddenly zooms up above your characters head. When this happens you can't see anything.

You know, I'm still a little undecided on the new battle system. I like the fact that you can see what's coming up, so you don't have to worry about walking in an area and something popping up, but at the same time, I am a bit old fashioned in RPG games and loved the turn-based battle system. I will say that the ability to control the action as the lead is pretty good. I might have to play XII a little more (something I admittedly haven't gotten around to) before I can have a definitive answer regarding the new battle system.

I like the turn based battle system of the previous games also. I just didn't like the random pop-up battle. All-in-all I am happy with the new system too. It would be cool if in the next one you can choose either or.....does anyone know if they are using a similar battle system in Final Fantasy 13?

I love the whole Final Fantasy series. From a story and graphics stand point, you definitely won't be disappointed. As far as the battle system goes, I do like it a lot. It just gets glitchy when you are in tight spaces.

It would be cool if you had a choice to turn it off and on, like they did with FFX-2. If you like the new system you can stick with that, but if it's driving you crazy you could switch to the other. :)

Square are trying to change around too many things with their FF franchise and for FFXIII they are actually going back to the old system and their might be a reason for that.
1. Maybe fans don't like the new system.
2. The old system is legendary and is what FF games are made of.
3. Because they've been with that system for 20 years they might want to keep it and also know how to make a masterpiece like that even better.
4. The battle system saved Squaresoft from going bankrupt and going out of business 20 years ago and want to keep it because it means so much to them.
5. The ATB system is simply brilliant.

I too love the battle system. The fight sequences are uninterrupted now without that annoying breakin glass. Especially the new gambit sytem enables you to stratesize in the battles and automate them. The Esper system is quite balanced instead of the overpowered summons usually seen in the previous games. but I found the level up spped quite slow and the licence grid too small. Overall it was better than all previous editions except maybe FF-X.
