How many remember the opening words to the theme song for the TV Show The Monkees? I loved this show and the group that came out of it. Yeah it was corny at times but it was a lot of fun to watch. Did you know that none of them even met before they were cast for the show? That the producers never planned on them making it to super stardom as a group? Kind of neat when you think of it.
So are there any other Monkees fans out there? Did you have a favorite one out of the group? Did you have a favorite song or an episode?
My favorite song was and still is "Shades of Grey". It's just one that always stuck with me. I'm torn though for a favorite character between Davy and Peter. Davy Jones is a great singer and I had a crush on him but Peter was just so naive and he always seemed like a little lost puppy to me.

Heheh I did as well. Davey Jones was very cute ;) Still was the last time I saw an image of him but that was a good while ago, like ten years or more. Have no clue how he looks now.

I love the Monkees! I have some of their episodes on tape. I'm only 27 but I love catching the reruns of their shows... and it's even better when there is a Monkees Marathon. I have a huge crush on the young Mickey Dolenz.

I totally loved that show! And the guys were so incredibly adorable. I loved all their songs, but if pressed to pick a favorite, I would choose "DayDream Believer"
I thought Mickey would be fun to hang out with.
I am surprised that they weren't a group before the show. They had amazing chemistry.

I agree, they appeared to have been together for some time. They did a great job with the casting I guess or it just shows how good of actors they are. I think it would have been fun to hang out with that group. It would have been a blast for sure.

My favorite song by them is "Daydream Believer", although I am not familiar with a whole lot of their music. My mom used to sing the theme song to my sister and I when we were younger. We used to say, mom, what did you watch when you were a little girl? And The Monkees was one of the shows she used to watch. So she'd start singing that song, which was funny because she wasn't the type to feel comfortable to break out in song. But she did. So I just think pure fun when I think of the Monkees. : )

Hehehe that is one show that the song really does stick out from. Of course doing the Monkee walk had to go with it. Did she teach you that as well?

She didn't teach you the walk? Shame on her. I hope she did by now. If not tell her it's mandatory when you sing that song. You have to do the walk. of course it's better if you have three or more people but still two can do it.

What great memories you brought back with this topic. I just loved watching The Monkees and, of course, I was so in love with Peter Tork. My favorite songs were "Daydream Believer" and "I'm a Believer". My hubby and I still sing along whenever we hear one of those on the radio.
Thanks for the links listed in the discussion. I did go and sign the petition for The Monkees to be put into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. They certainly do belong there.

I did use to love watching that show when I was little. But I can hardly remember much about them or their songs to be able to say my favorite song, episode or monkee.
I had heard that they didn't know each other before hand. Well it sure worked - huh? LOL

Yeah it did work out for them, a lot better then they thought. I'm watching some of their work on youtube. If you go to watch it the lip syncing was that bad back then. It was funny to watch. It is not the copy just so you know.

I LOVED THE MONKEES!! Davy Jones was just so cute and his accent drove me up the wall. The show was campy and so much fun. Contrary to popular opinion, they could play their own instruments. In fact, Davy was the only one trained as an actor from what I understand.
Thanks for this memory.

He did stick out frm the group with the accent. It wasn't a strong one either but he may have played it down at the time. It was campy but enjoyable. I'd love to show my niece it but I haven't seen it on to do so :(

I knew there were more lyrics than just the first verse so I went searching the web. Here's what I found.
(And oh yeah --- Peter Tork Forever!!!!)
Theme from The Monkees
By Tommy Boyce and Bobby Hart
Here we come, walkin'
Down the street.
We get the funniest looks from
Ev'ry one we meet.
Hey, hey, we're the Monkees
And people say we monkey around.
But we're too busy singing
To put anybody down.
We go wherever we want to,
do what we like to do
We don't have time to get restless,
There's always something new.
Hey, hey, we're the Monkees
And people say we monkey around.
But we're too busy singing
To put anybody down.
We're just tryin' to be friendly,
Come and watch us sing and play,
We're the young gneration,
And we've got something to say.
Any time, Or anywhere,
Just look over your shoulder
Guess who'll be standing there
Hey, hey, we're the Monkees
And people say we monkey around.
But we're too busy singing
To put anybody down.
(break)
Hey, hey, we're the Monkees
And people say we monkey around.
But we're too busy singing
To put anybody down.
We're just tryin' to be friendly,
Come and watch us sing and play,
We're the young gneration,
And we've got something to say.
Hey, hey, we're the Monkees
Hey, hey, we're the Monkees
[repeat and fade]
extra verse:
Hey, hey, we're the Monkees,
You never know where we'll be found.
so you'd better get ready,
We may be comin' to your town.

I loved the Monkeys. We did not have a TV so I never saw the show but Kelloggs cereal put free records on the back of the cereal box. Do you remember those? My Aunt saved them all for me in exchange for me washing and waxing her car inside and out. I thought I got the best deal in the world. LOL Now I know better. LOL Thanks for the memories

Hehe no I don't remember that but I bet my brother does. He's 10 years older then me. I mostly watched The Monkees in reruns. It was on every summer on the one channel when I was growing up. When they changed the schedule we knew summer break was coming up.

I wonder if the show is on DVD or not. Be cool to have it. Yeah it was corney and all but it was still cute and funny. Besides the music was great.

I was a fan of the Monkees, I loved the show, and I know that they hadn't meet prior to doing the show, and that in the begining they didn't even get to do their own music that the show decided what music was going to be done, often they didn't even play the instruments on the recordings.
They had to struggle to get to be real musicians and won.
I always liked the song I Wanna Be Free. there are a lot of songs by the Monkees that I enjoyed, not sure I have a favorite, I liked Buy Me A Dog, it was fun, and goofy, and of course there were the ones everyone knows, Valerie, Last Train to Clarksville, I'm a Believer.
Sometimes when we teased me niece when she was young we called her monkey and so I started singing her the theme song when I was teasing her.

I love the song "I wanna be Free". It's another great one by them. One of my nieces movies recently had I'm a Believer in it but sung by someone else. I just can't remember what one it was.

I seen the show a few times but I do know who the Monkees are. I thought that Davy was the best looking one but I think Peter was the funniest.
"Daydream Believer" is my favorite song. However, I liked the theme song for the song a lot too!! It was just a corny but catchy song.

Hello Emeraldisle,
OK, so I've been pondering this question of your for days now. Not because I didn't watch "The Monkeys", I did, and I loved it. But, because the theme song was totally overridden by your posting as "Here we come, walking down the street". And I just couldn't rid my mind of the song: "Here we come just a walking down the street, singing do wa diddy diddy dum diddy dee". It's been driving me bonkers.
Anyway, I loved The Monkeys. What a riot they were. Perhaps the last of the true slapstick comedians in our contemporary world ... aside from cartoons.
And no, I did not know that they were unaquainted before the show. That's actually pretty cool!

It was actually for the other song "Here she comes just a walking down the street signing do wa diddy diddy..." or at least the first part of it was but either way I can well understand why it would put that part into your head :)
I agree they were a riot and perhaps the last of the slapstick comedians. It was a strange show and perhaps a bit odd but I loved it. I wish I could still watch it.
I thought it was interesting as well when I found that out about them not knowing one another. I had watched one special about the show and some others like the Partridge family and it talked about how they had auditioned them and then put them all together for the show.

I have no idea what you are talking about...lol. I loved their show. Davy was cute but too short for me. I like Micky Dolenz. Years before, he played the "boy" in "Circus Boy", a show I watched as a child. (Now I'm showing my age...lol.)

Monkees!!!
Loved 'em. They were on an obscure TV channel for a while out here, but I missed most of the eps. Dang!
I liked Mike Nesmith when I was a kid. Why? He wore a hat, all the time. I also think he reminded me a little of Leonard Nimy, who I was infatuated with, as "Spock".
I dunno, I was a weird little kid!
Later I changed over to liking Peter! I just loved his antics. He was ever the lovable one, the guy who never did anything wrong, and was always so sweet!
I met him in person in Greenwitch Village. I actually knocked him over...but that's a story for when I can cut and paste! Oh, the silliness of it all...
Anywho, he's got a website, too.

PS: He's a REALLY really, NICE guy. I mean it.

I do agree that Nesmith did look a bit like Spock back then. Lets face it though as kids we don't distinguish as much between people. I know my niece will often say that's whoever from something and it's not, just has the same coloring and build.

I LOVE the Monkees. They are my fav music group. Peter is my fav. It goes Peter, Mike, Micky then Davy. I have a few fav songs. I like Can You Dig It, For Pete's Sake, etc. I like Peter cuz he does play the dummy on tv but is a real smart guy. I haven't met him but from what I've read about him, he's a great guy. I haven't seen all the shows but what I do have and have watched I love it. I don't even care if it's cheezy, that's what's so great about it.

The Monkees are the greatest! My favorite band ever! And I was born the year they broke up, so sad. My sister always called me a reject from the 60's, that doesn't really make sence but I think she meant I should have been in the 60's. I should have too!
My favorite was Davy but as I got older I really liked Mickey, he had all the best songs. My favorite album is actually Changes, I love the song "Oh, my, my" and "Bye, bye, baby, bye, bye" but there are so many great songs!
Davy and Mickey also have official myspace pages too.
Micky is going to be at Dragon Con this year and I am trying to go, I cant wait to meet him again. I got my picture taken with him when he was at the fair grounds years ago when I lived in California, that was awsome!
