Getting healthcare when you are in between jobs and don't have health insurance?

My husband and I are living the CA and he got laid off this other job and found a new one....however his new insurance policy hasn't been implemented yet and he is really sick at the moment and needs treatment. He has paid one really short and insufficient consult out of his own pocket and is delaying going back because of the expense and trying to stretch out his pain pills. Are there any free clinics at all if you don't have medicaid in California?
