how many characters can be used for a domain name and what characters

for ex yahoo.com if instead of yahoo i want to use something else then upto what length i can use that is restriction of characters and what characters r permissible
its a dns concept that much i know

Up to 2 to 3 letters will make, COM = Commercial, EDU = Education, or even your countries first 2 letter.
