Kids like to play or touch pets, and cats don't like that! Ive had a cat that passed, and he hated my son touching him, but we just got a puppy and my son loves it. Having a puppy is like having two babies. You have to walk them and play with them too. So think about it carefully.

I love both they are soooooo adorable especially when they are so tiny and small. but dogs tend to grow very fast and most kids sometimes lose interest after they are no longer little pups but bigger.. But kittens and cats stay a favorite longer because most do not get big and they are mostly always wanting cuddled and you are right most you have to do is point to a litter box or such and no potty training required...and they are relaxing to have around..if you have no allergies.. they can be a pain..lol..i would get a kitten because if they grow up with your child or around children then you have no worries... but then you have the pup..aka..the dog..most times dogs get tied up and you dont get to spend as much time playing with them as they like.. and more dirty clothes to wash if they play with the dog who is has been tied up because they always seem to be able to get dirty..most cats stay clean..So i say the worst thing about having the cat is having to empty the litter box when it needed..well in my opinion anyhow,,thanks..
