Teen Violance

When I was growing up we had our punks, head bangers and preps. There was vandalism; kids skipped school, and there was violence. However, I think violence among today's youth is continuing to grow and it might even be worse than it was 20 years ago when I was a teen.
I think a majority of the youth today, aged 10 to 19, have very little if any respect for adults. Today it is nothing for a teen to use foul language towards an adult.
I was reading a new article that said " Police are facing increasing violence and intimidation from teenagers who have no respect for the law."
A series of parent workshops are being held to address teen violence in Indianapolis. A 14-year-old boy is appearing in a Vancouver, Canada court Tuesday in connection with the fatal stabbing of another teen. An awareness walk, was held on Saturday in Ottawa with a goal of preventing teen violence.
Last Boxing day a 15 year old girl was shopping with her parents when she was killed in the crossfire of a gang shootout in Toronto.
"In 1998, about a third of all victims of violent crime were ages 12 to 19 and almost half of all victims of violence were under age 25. (Bureau of Justice Statistics, U.S. Department of Justice)"
In 2001, 5,486 young people ages 10 to 24 were murdered-an average of 15 each day (CDC 2004).
During the last five years for which statistics are available, more youth (ages 12-24) died from gun violence than from motor vehicle injuries (CDC 2004).
In a nationwide survey, 17% of students reported carrying a weapon.

I also believe that there has been a dramtic increase inviolence among teens since my childhood....no tha was no the dark ages either...LOL
When I was a teenager...kids fought but they fought with their fists...there was not normally a concern of weapons being brought into it....that is not the case now a days...
I was raised not to start fights but that I was not expected to stand there and let someone beat the stuffings out of me either...I have always tried to avoid confrontations....NOW I teach me children and grandchildren to avoid confrontation at all costs...call me, go to another adult, tell a teacher, call the cops...whatever it takes to pretect themselves becasue as the statistics show......there are a large part of the teenage peopluation carrying some type of weapon everyday...everywhere they go...alone or in groups.....it scares the hell out of me......

Sadly, most of the violent kids here in Canada are first generation Canadians whose parents were so busy working to give them everything they wanted they forgot to instil a respect for life and property into these punks. Then again, many of the parents are violent themselves, coming from war torn countries or countries where only violence rules. They never learned to fit into society, and raised their kids to think they deserve better than most Canadians simply by giving them everything they ask for. Here in Calgary, these thugs drive $40,000 cars and literally own restaraunters and bar owners because they push all others out of their favourite places. Those that stand up to them get killed.

It has defintely gotten worse, even since i was a kid and i am just 26. We would have never dreamt about acting out like some of the kids are today... I was taught to always respect elders and grownups, but also children around me and that is something I keep with me to this day.
I do not know how we can stop the world from taking this direction...

I am in agreement with you, Swtrose. There is an epidemic of teen violence right her in my city. I say the lack of training at home is a big contributor to this epidemic. So many parents fail to instill moral values into their kids when they are young, and this leads to no respect for authority when they get to be teens. Jesse Jackson was in our city last weekend to address this very issue. It is so bad that I am beginning to hate watching the news each day because there is usally a teen shooting before the newscast is over. I feel that the government is also largely responsible for this trend. When they took away the parents rights to discipline their children the kids got the message that they can get away with anything without fear of punishment. Also, the trend in violent music can be partially responsible. Parents should be more aware of what their kids are listening to and what types of videos they are watching.

Yes, It's very scary. Things were not as bad, even when I was a punk teen. It seems like it just gets worse and worse. When you read about people that want to cut open other people's spines for having a difference of opinion it really shows you how society is lately. Hopefully people that talk like this won't act on it, but your statistics are pretty alarming, so it just goes to show you that you never know!

Admittedly, it is quite disheartening to see how the youth of today, especially those who commit teen violence, has degenerated to a point of seeming moral decadence.
It is very alarming to see how some teens easily destroy the lives of their fellowmen by their condemnable acts of violence, which could readily be seen in the media nowadays.
As the rate of teen violence grows to epic proportions and it becomes more pervasive as days pass by, one couldn't help but wonder why these despicably revolting acts occur.
I was particularly shocked when I learned of the shooting spree at Virginia Tech, which was truly agonizing to say the least, since it claimed the lives of innocent students, who have bright futures ahead of them.
To be sure, though, the shooting at Virginia Tech was not the first of its kind because there are other shooting incidents like the Columbine incident, which preceded it.
Thus, the inevitable question, to my mind, is: what's the root of teen violence?
I truly feel that there is probably no single root cause of teen violence but perhaps there are a gamut of reasons why teen violence seems to be so widespread in the world today.
For one, I feel that parents are partly responsible for how their children turn up to be.
If parents would be imbibing the right values to their kids and they would practice what they preach and would, thus, be living examples of the right values they teach to their kids, then I feel that their kids would find it easy to acquire such values and live it out as well.
Conversely, if parents would teach the wrong values to their kids, and would be bad examples or, worse, would just neglect their kids, then I feel that it would be detrimental to the overall development of their kids.
If, for instance, parents constantly fight in front of their kids or, even worse, constantly inflict harm on their kids, without any valid reason, then it could very well be likely that their kids' development will be negatively affected.
Their kids could perhaps plant hate or seeds of vengeance in their hearts, which they could release in a number of ways. One of the manifestations of their vengeful feelings could be in the form of teen violence.
Conceivably, thus, it is quite apparent that if parents would not properly rear their kids, then their kids may potentially commit violence.
The environment where a child grows up could also be a contributing factor to the development of such child.
For instance, if the child grows in an environment where violence is prevalent or it is the way of life, and if such child does not have parents who guide him to do what is right or, for some wicked reason, even tolerate his actions or, worse, condone it, then it is quite possible that such child will be influenced by his environment.
If such child would be influenced by his violent environment and he will think that his violent tendencies are perfectly normal, since his parents tolerate or even approve of it, then it is highly likely that such child could commit teen violence.
In this case, the child seems to be a helpless victim of his family and his environment.
Further, a child could likewise probably commit teen violence if he's been the victim of unbearable ridicule and abuse.
If, for instance, an innocent child who only tries to be the best son, best student, or best member of society that he can be would, for no apparent reason, be subjected to constant ridicule and/or abuse, and such child would just keep it to himself, then it is highly likely that if such child could not bear the ridicule and abuse anymore, such child could explode and engage in teen violence.
It goes without saying, however, that the means employed by a child under the circumstances I've cited could not be condoned. Eye for an eye would only likely result in more bloodshed.
The possible solution, I feel, is for children under such circumstances to be understood and given the adequate assistance that they direly need before they even become the monsters they ought not to become.
I feel that for such solution to come about, however, the full cooperation of everyone is needed.

What are our social scientists doing? They must have conducted research. What are the findings?
I may be wrong, but I have a feeling that it has a lot to do with the environment in which the teenagers have been growing up. Families are breaking and this adversely affects children. Seeing unpleasant conditions at home, they must be feeling insecured and since they are at loss at that time, they grow up with pent up feelins that manifest themselves when they start believing that they are now incharge of their life.
If they could tell honestly, many of them are likely to complain that they have been deprived of love, care, sense of security and attention that they ought to have got as a child.
