Pit Bull Scenario...What Should Happen?

I have a scenario for each of you to consider involving a pit bull. Let's say that someone breaks into another persons home where a pit bull is waiting on the other side of the door. Say the pit bull attacks the person breaking in to the point of death...should the pit bull be put to sleep because of it? What if it had been another breed of dog? Obviously a person doesn't deserve a death sentense for breaking into a house, but should the pit bull face any consequeces because of it? Was the pit bull simply protecting his/her home or has he proven that he's a danger to society and should be removed? Your thoughts and opinions are appreciated!

In my personal opinion, if you enter someplace that you were intending to do criminal activity you deserve what you get. The dog is contained within the home or building or wherever and that criminal had no right being there in the first place! A dog will protect his home just like we would....besides don't we have dogs not only as companions but as protectors? I don't think that a dog should be put to sleep for something like this.

As with any dog, this scenario just shows an animal protecting its territory and its pack. If the person had not been committing a crime then he would have been safe so, even if this sounds horrible, it was his own fault.

I THINK that around here if an intruder is hurt or killed INSIDE the place he is breaking into, then the intruder is at fault and the animal or person responsible for hurting or killing that intruder does not suffer. IF the person is NOT completely in the house though, it means that there is a chance for liability. I personally think that once you break and enter you're fair game.

I am not sure what the law says but I think that legally if the intruder is completely inside the home that the homeowner should not be liable. I do not know for sure though, and I do not know for sure if they would take the fact that a dog (of any breed) into consideration. I do not think that they should, but they might consider that once an animal kills once, it is more likely to kill again.

I think a lot of people would say the dog should be put down. I don't. The dog was defending his territory and had the right to do so. The dog for crying out loud is inside of his house and the person is breaking in. If any of the members had shown up the person who was breaking in could have hurt them. Pit Bulls have bad reputations through no fault of theirs but the owners who have bred them for things that should not be. I am sure though that there would be a shout for the poor dogs blood simply because his breed is Pit Bull.

I don't think it's right to put down any breed of dog for protecting its home/territory. If anything dogs should be trained to attack intruders, it might help out with crime a bit more.

If the robber didn't do anything to dog then yes. Even if the dog was defending the house it doesn't matter because it could always just do it to someone who visiting and they don't know them. Otherwise sure, the robber should of expected the dog to bite him. ~Joey

This is a very sensitive subject for me. I have a pitbull mix and I couldn't love her more if I had given birth to her myself. She is my baby. I've always feared her having to protect me and someone trying to hurt her for it. I don't know if this would be the right answer but if my dog ever bit an intruder I think I would hit the guy in the head to knock him out, take a knife and cut him wherever she had bit him to make it not look like a bite, wash her off really good and then call the cops and tell them I stabbed him. I would defend my baby with my life and if anyone ever tried to take her they would have to kill me first...................................sorry, went on a bit of a rant for a second there, like I said very sensitive subject for me, my dog is my daughter.
