Paypal, Currency Exchange and Fees

I currently have a Paypal and an e-gold account. Since I currently live in Japan, I plan to transfer funds from either account to my local bank account in Japan. From what I read on the Paypal website, there's a charge of 500 yen for transactions that are less than 50,000 yen. I'm also assuming my local bank will also charge a fee to receive the money since it's an electronic transfer. Has anyone had any experience with this kind of problem. What would be a "safe" amount to transfer so that a huge chunk of money is not taken off. Your suggestions, advice and answers would be greatky appreciated.
