How do you decide if your glasses are good enough?

So I get a call last week asking if my glasses are good, or if I need to change them. It's hard to tell. They're certainly an improvement from how I was seeing before. But I wonder still what else I could be seeing that perhaps others might be seeing. So I told them I'd call back later since I don't know yet. My first test with glasses is, "Do these make my eyes water?" Typically, I end up with a perscription far worse than what it should be. So I get watery eyes. And then I can't wear the glasses. Then I see if the glasses cause more headaches. In this case, for the first 3 days I got the most awful headache from the glasses. But then I seemed to be fine after that. Lastly, I try to determine if I can see. But it's hard, because I don't see like most people. I can only imagine what most people see. So I have a couple questions for anyone willing to spend the time to answer one, a couple, or all of them. 1. When you walk around in the dark, do you see complete blackness? I see like TV snow (white fuzz) that moves. 2. When looking at your monitor, does it seem to sort of "sparkle"? Flicker? Mine does. And it's an extremely nice monitor. With the glasses it is a bit better though. 3. When driving at night, is there a giant halo around every street light and traffic signal? Or is that just my vision only? 4. When looking around the room, do you see "iso noise" like you would in pictures taken with your digital camera? I do. 5. How long can you read for? I used to only be able to read for 15 minutes before glasses, and even that was pretty poor. Now I can read for maybe an hour. Is it easy for you to read for more than an hour? Or do the words always get up and start moving on the page at some point? If you can describe good vision to me, it would be much appreciated! I want to figure out if what I'm seeing is okay, or if I could have better filters and perhaps a better glass perscription too.

Well I don't know exactly how to explain what my vision is like but I will answer your questions though...I hope that at least helps. And boy do I ever feel for you! 1. When you walk around in the dark, do you see complete blackness? NO MY EYES USUALLY ADJUSTS WERE I CAN SEE THE SHAPES AND OUTLINES 2. When looking at your monitor, does it seem to sort of "sparkle"? Flicker? NO 3. When driving at night, is there a giant halo around every street light and traffic signal? SOMETIMES IF I'M REALLY TIRED OR IF I'VE HAD MY CONTACTS IN ALL DAY IT DOES 4. When looking around the room, do you see "iso noise" like you would in pictures taken with your digital camera? NO 5. How long can you read for? HONESTLY I DON'T KNOW WITH MY GLASSES ON BECAUSE I USUALLY TAKE THEM OFF BUT I WOULD SAY AT LEAST SEVERAL HOURS

Wow... I think my glasses definitely aren't good enough. I'm going back on Thursday to see if I can get a new and better pair.

I think it went pretty well. Of course, the ultimate test will be actually getting the glasses and seeing if they work so well at home. But the first time, I didn't feel like the glasses would even work. This last time, I had a better feeling about the visit when I left.

It's very difficult to accurately describe what I see. My vision is pretty normal I think, but a picture paints a thousand words, as they say so I could babble on forever about my sight generally! I'll do my best for you though, pal! 1 - My eyes adjust to the dark in a minute or two. If indoors, when I turn off the lights it goes almost completely black. Except maybe streetlights showing through windows), but my eyes become used to the low levels of light, so after a while it's a bit like wearing sunglasses indoors. 2 - I've never seen a monitor appear to do that. It must be something to do with the refresh frequency or something. 3 - There isn't usually a halo, except in misty / foggy weather or if it's cold in winter. Seeing a halo around street-lights normally means that there will be frost the next morning.

sorry i got distracted. 4 - My vision seems to be pretty clear for a few miles when i look out of the window, but it mustn't really be so, because I can't see the number-boards on the front of busses until they're quite close.

Thanks so much for the very detailed descriptions! All monitors are a bit crazy for me, as are lights in stores (fluorescent). I have a super nice monitor, so the refresh rate is probably fine. It's one of those NEC LCD monitors. That's interested about the halo being only in fog or cold weather, makes sense. Our weather doesn't get that cold here, and it's not foggy all the time. So it must be my eyes. :( I think I am going to get my glasses redone. I can only read for awhile and I get horrible headaches. I can read about 15 minutes pretty good, at 30 it's getting bad, and beyond that you could hardly call it reading. But without the glasses, at 15 minutes I'm doing horrible. Still, I'm hoping I could read for more than 30 minutes sometime. That'd be nice. As it is, today I had a bunch of stuff to do but I was stuck with a horrible headache.

and again!!!! 5 - i can read pretty much for as long as I like, but if I get right into a novel and read a lot for a few days in a row, I start to get headaches through eye-strain.

I feel one should go for eye examination one or twice a year especially if one wears glasses. As it is not easy to find out if the power of our glasses has increased and therfore need to be changed. Though if we fel eye strain and have problems sighting written material we should go for eye checkup. If we wait too long power of glasses may increase further which should be avoided. Cheers:)

With mine, it isn't so much the power changing as the tint changing. I have a hard time even getting what power mine should be because if I go in in the morning, the eye doctor will tell me I don't need glasses. If I go in the evening, they'll think I'm nearly blind.

Every year, the grade of my eyes increase so I have to change eyeglasses. When I get new glasses, I guess I just base it whether if it's comfortable to wear, and of course if it's stylish. But then of course style comes next to whether i'm really seeing clearly. I don't really have that much problems with my eyes.. it's just that the grade increases per year.

I don't have the option to change the style (without paying a ton more money anyway). But I can have the prescription and tinting changed if needed. I have a lot of problems reading words and letters, so it's hard for me to get a good prescription and it's hard for me to judge if reading is too hard or not. I'm so used to reading being a challenge.

I prefer eyes. I believe that people can actually communicate by using only EYES without saying anything. I'll see his/her eyes before looking at other part of his/her. Actually both of them. If I really have to choose, I prefer eyes. Beautiful eyes tell everything. Lucky us nowadays we don't have to worry if we don't have them. Cosmetics is always there for us. It's just depends how much we want the changes to ourselves. Eyes are much more attractive, as they can express themself what they are and what they want? Lips are attractive too, but they can't express.

Your response has nothing to do with this discussion. I realize it's a long discussion and you probably didn't read much more than the title. But even reading the title alone, what would make you think this discussion is about what body part you are attracted to?
