My 11 month olds are terrified of it, they will scream and holler untill it is turned off and out of their sight. I know little kids have fears because i used to be scared of the vacum too and i was 3, I was talking to my husband and he told me his fear when he was little was after he was done taking a bath he would jump out because he thought he would be sucked down the drain with the water. So out of curiosity what was your fear when you were little? and oh yea does anyone know how I can calm my girls down around the vacum? http://mommysmakemoney.blogspot.com http://latestrevolution.blogspot.com

my little girl used to be scared of the vaccuum cleaner too. She still sort of is, when I first turn it on she panics a little bit but gets used to it. Its the sound they are scared of as my daughter was also scared of the air compressor we use to blow up the air mattress when guests come. The first person to reply, pradeep782, has pretty good advice. Show the bubs how to turn it on and off, showing them how the sound comes on then goes away. You could even let them turn it on and off, but i dont know how that will go later when you are trying to vaccuum and they keep swithching it off on you lol. I think that using it as often as possible will also get them used to it.

Funny, When I was a kid mom ran the vacum on Saturday morning to wake us up. I rather sleep in, but I am sad to say it works.

My daughter is scared of the vaccum as well. It seems to have gotten a little better over the months. What I would do to calm her is to hold her while I vaccum a little to show her there is nothing to be afraid of. Or if my fiance is home he would hold her while I vaccum. That seems to help a little.

Ahh... My daughter loved the vacuum when she was a newborn. She would actually fall asleep every time I ran the vacuum. When my daughter was around 1 is when she started screaming when I ran it. I never understood that because it use to sooth her to sleep. ANyway, I had to either put her up high, like the couch while I vacuumed and that seemed to make her feel safe. I also went out and I got her a toy vacuum called "Dusty" and he makes sounds like a vacuum and says funny phrases. She hated it and was even scared of that for a while, but she finally did calm down and around 2/3 she was helping with vacuuming. My son, he loves the vacuum and he is always right behind me. He is 16 months and he also has a play vacuum that he loves and pushes around all over. The only time he crys and it's weird, is when he is right infront of the vacuum. Maybe he thinks it's going to suck him up. LOL! For you, I would try maybe a toy vacuum. They have them at toysrus and they are called "Dusty the talking Vacuum". Or maybe try putting them on a couch to sit or a playpen while you vacuum. Hopfully they will one day get use to it. You say 11 month olds, so I'm guess you have more then one? So I guess holding one would be out of the question. Sometimes I had to hold my daughter while I vacuumed. I guess you might just have to just let them work it out. Keep telling them it's okay and talk with them as you vacuum. And as for me. I was scared of the drain in the bathtub as well. I always thought my legs would be sucked down. I was also scared of snowmen. I remember making a snowman with my dad and then when it was time for bed, I cried and screamed until the snowman was knocked down. My dad said he had to go back outside in the middle of the night and beat the snowman down. Go figure, I even helped make it. Kids are silly. LOL! I even hated baby dolls. I always thought they would get me in my sleep. One day I tossed all my dolls in the swimming pool. I was about 5 years old. I guess it didn't help when my older sisters made me watch that horror movie called "chucky".. LOL!

OMG I'm almost 50 years of age and i can tell you the vacuum is not my biggest fear anymore but it use to be and up until this day I hate, no wait I detest the sound of a vacuum cleaner. If they make one tomorrow with no sound, and ask a million dollars for it, I will make a loan at the bank and buy it!

i dont think they are afraid of sucking in, i thnk they are afraid of the sound it produces, you can calm them down by showing them with out switching it on and then later on switch it on holding you child near it so that they can se that you are puting it on.
