Is cooking becoming a lost art?

We are all so busy working and trying to keep the everyday life together. And this takes time. A lot of time. And then some of the important things have to give room for the busy stuff. For instance cooking. How much time do we spend on cooking a nice dinner? Not a lot. More and more often it has to be dinners made in less than half an hour. But can you make something really special in half an hour? Is cooking becoming a lost art?

I agree that cooking has become a lost art in the home. In part I believe because of microwaves. I personally do not own one and eat a lot healthier as a result. It was a decision not to buy one that changed how we ate a lot. We cook a complete meal every night. Sometimes I do it, sometimes my husband does it. We both enjoy using spices of one kind or another, and coming up with new ways to flavor things for variety. Often our meals only take 30=60 minutes to prepare. We make a lot of things homemade from desserts to main courses. We buy a lot of whole foods, not much in boxes and bags. We actually cook breakfast most of the time. (Though we have cereal and stuff too). But take the time to cook partially because our 7 year old son is diabetic and most of the bags boxes and cans out there have a lot of things in them that he doesn't need. Buying whole foods has lowered our food bill. Buying whole foods has made us a lot more creative with things.

I too believe that microwaves are the big sinner here. TV-dinners and whatever you call it is the quick and lazy solution to buzy people but not the healthy solution. It sounds like you have made the difficult solution possible. In my family we are also trying to spend time on both buying quality food and cooking variated dinners. I feel we are better off this way and for our daughter (2 years old) it is very important to eat healthy. The first couple of years are very important for a human being when it comes to nutrition.
