Human Nature

Should we all just follow our nature-inner drives or resist against them and follow some ideal?
My biggest question is what makes up human nature?
Anger? Violence? Are we naturally violent angry people? It seems that way.
Are we happy people? What is happiness? Why does it matter to be happy? Everyone I know, talks about how you should live your life in true happiness;
What about power? It seems that EVERYONE is a power craver of some sort, whether that be in looks, knowledge, ability, persuasion, social, etc.
What makes up human nature, and why? And should we follow that particular trait?

It's human nature for people to be selfish..that's what they say..but the challenge for us is to conquer this selfishness and be giving to others. We shouldn't follow this particular trait since it do us no good.
