It is important that the yellow line for crossing the road is marked by the police. It is further important that the vehicles stop to make the people to cross the road. In India, it is a bad practice the vehicles dont stop when they see people waiting to cross the road.Only when the Traffic police is there the vehicles stop until the people cross the road.It is ridiculous for each and everything people expect the law enforcing force to be in the scene when there is automatic signal notification provided. Every citizen has to perform his duty. Here there is no law and order unless policeman are on duty.I would like to know your views about this?

It's exactly the same in here. That's why i don't have driver's license until now. It's really scary for pedestrian and drivers too. That's why the policeman should pay attention more and more, in order the driver became fully understand why they have to obey the traffic regulations

Suba, you are right that people are not disciplined in following the traffic rules. Vehicle keep on moving, bothering little about the pedestrains. I think to facilitate crossing of pedestrains, a ZEBRA crossing is marked by whiteline, before the Red Light, I find it everywhere (on red lights) here in Delhi. Wherever the drivers are desciplined, they stop the vechiles before Zebra crossing for pedestrain to cross the road. I also stop my vehicle normally, before the Zebra crossing. People driving in their vehciles,I think, should be more aware and careful about pedestrain's rights. I have read somewhere, in a country like China, first preference is given to pedestrains, then to cyclists and then to cars and scooters. Nonetheless, a very good suggestion by you. deepak

yeah, you are right. every citizen has to perform his/her duty. even though the police marked pedestrian crossings, vehicles still don't stop whenever they see people cross the road. here in philippines, the private and public vehicles have no respect for the people who walk or cross the road. its like they don't care about the who comes in their way. they think that the people who cross has no chance with their big vehicles. this bothers me a lot. i really hate it when they feel like own the road.

I believe yellow lines are to help maintain traffic flow and prevent accidents. It supposed to be for both vehicles and pedestrains alike, though vehicles would have to obey the traffic rules more than pedestrains. Unlike drivers, pedestrains do not have to take highway code or pass any test to be on the road. But, pedestrains are not constraint by blind spots. Pedestrains too have the ability to check out the traffic conditions and make right decision for himself. So it would not make much sense for a vehicle to stop at a yellow line if the traffic is clear and safe to move on. On the other hand, policemen would be out of job if they are not needed to maintain law and order ;P

I also live in a city like you in india & the same condition prevail here also.People don't want to wait in road.Everybody is in hurry to go.so if there is no police man then they just ignore this yellow lines which sometimes lead to serious accidents. Most pf the people here in our country lack civic sense & don't consider it to be duty to obey laws.n fact you will find most of themsaying it in pride that how they didnot saw the signal or overcame a oice at traffice & so on.

In Sri Lanka the motorists respect the yellow lines or the zebra crossing as we call it. But there are times when accidents have occured on the crossing itself. In some places where there are schools police have constructed humps on the road so that vehicles are compelled to slow down when they approach the zebra crossing.

In my town there are yellow lines on several roads especially those places closed to markets or schools. Here I observed that most drivers do obey the rules even though there were no police on guard. Occasionally some drivers may break the rule when they are probably in a hurry or they never notice the yellow line at all lol.

You are right. Those lines are there such that the vehicles stop for the people to cross the road. Even i have found people not respecting these rules and just keep moving. Only rare people do stop at that line and allow the walkers to cross the road. Well, i think that only education can prevent such problems. The basis for all problems is education. Once the individual is educated he/she understands and reacts accordingly.
