Help! Litter trained but still peeing everywhere

Ok, granted he's an inbred, but is that an excuse for an 8 month old litter trained kitten to pee all over the house? Any tips on how to stop this behaviour? I've already tried the pheremone treatment, but it was useless. I need help before the house is overrun with the smell!!

I was told that if you get him neutered he will stop peeing all over the house.

I sure hope so for our sake. The problem is the finances at the moment. They're tied up with more important things so this needs to wait. Thanks for the response.

Where are you located? In the USA? If so, I can get you a coupon that will make it completely affordable. Did you get the kittne from outside? Was it a stray? If so, you can get an additional discount from a vet. Many give "feral/stray" discounts that are not disclosed to the general public (unless you go to them or call them and actually ask.) Give me a few moments and I'll post a site for a coupon. I'll also research your local vets discounts if you like, PM me with your city/location and I'll find someone for you.

I'm in Canada, so the coupon idea won't work.

Found it. Call these people: Toronto spay/neuter Clinic: 416-338-6281 (I just looked at your profile.) Hope this is close enough for you. From what I can see, most charge $50 as a discounted neuter, the younger the male cat, the lower the cost, usually. Call them and tell them that right now you're financially strapped, the cat is a stray who you don't want to give away, and that you need financial help to get him neutered. I'm sure there will be some sort of program that you can participate in. If all else fails, contact your OSPCA?? (I think it's called that near you) and ask for a coupon for discounted neutering. Hint: the sooner you get them fixed, the less your place will smell, and the sooner the cat will stop spraying. It's also cheaper to get them snipped sooner since the fees are based upon the age of the cat. The best cure for the smell is "Nature's Miracle" solution - available at Pet Stores, but if you're strapped try a 1/2 and 1/2 vinegar and water solution. Spray in on the affected materiales. Wash anything that you can ASAP, so that the cat does not keep returning to the spot and reapplying it's scent.

Last time I was on the Toronto website, they said the clinic was shut down for an investigation. I'll double check and see if they're open again. Our local humane society will not spay/neuter animals that have not been adopted from their shelters. I don't know how long that rule has been in place, and personally I think it sucks. Low income people used to be able to take their pets there for a reduced fee and it was much easier. Maybe it's because they rely strictly on donations that they can't afford it, but who knows. I'll have to get some vinegar and try that idea. I've normally used spot carptet cleaner or Febreeze on the carpet to get rid of the smell, and it works until he does it again.

Looks like the clinic is open again. I'm going to call and find out what their fees are and get this done soon. We have 3 cats that need this done.

Nuetering your pet does help this, but he could also have a urinary tract infection. My one cat was fixed and he peed all over the place, the vet said he had a urinary tract infection once they cured this he was fine. It is a common thing for male cats to get.

The only problem is that he's selective on when he'll pee in the house. He will use the box sometimes, but then he'll try to go right in front of me, knowing that I'm going to stop him. Seems to be a habit all three of the cats have picked up, but he's the worst of them all.

Some cats just do that when they're upset or for their own reasons. We have one cat that if she gets upset because you pet her too long and she growls she'll go pee on something other than the litter box. Generally she goes for my step father's shoe lately, however if no shoes are available she'll take anything she can get. She's a sweet cat and wonderful once you get past her being tempermental, however that is just a part of her that you have to love and deal with if you're going to have her and love her. Some cats just do that and they have their own reasons for it. If your cat does that I strongly advise some of the products available at PetCo and PetSmart for removing the odors. I've had luck with several of them and swear by them at this point. If the item is washable then use color safe bleach and wash it immediately. If the item isn't then try those products and 409. If you catch him in the act is the only time to tell him what he's doing is bad. Another thing to try is keeping his litterbox immaculate. We do have one other cat that will pee the floor if there is ANYTHING in her box. So when she goes we have to clean it up immediately or we'll end up scrubbing the floor too. It's just part of life with cats.

Thanks for the response. It's funny with this cat though, he'll use the litterbox even when it's dirty, but only sometimes will he not. I have caught him a few times getting ready to pee and I'm able to stop him, but that's only when he's about to do so right in front of me. I use a special carpet cleaner as that's usually what he pees on, or he'll go on the tile floor in the hallway.

I also think you should get him fixed, if there's any way possible. Another thought, has there been any big changes in your household? New baby, moving, anything like that? We had a cat that reacted terribly to a move to another state. He wouldn't use the litter box at all! It got so bad we had to give him away.

He was brought to us a few months ago, so no big changes since then. We are going to get him fixed, but we have to get his shots before we can do anything else.

Male cats like to "mark" their territory and they do it by spraying. A lot of places neuter for little to nothing here in the U.S. because they want to keep the pet population down. Good luck!

It's too bad that this country really doesn't care about controling the pet population. It's a shame and I don't know why the government doesn't care about it.
