You could also check with other local businesses to see if they might have some freelance work available. If you write for sites like Helium or Associated Content, you could add your published articles to your portfolio and resume as examples of your "published" work.

For this answer, it depends on the individual to judge but for me i feel that it is not as good as writing for blogs as they are willing to pay you more.
