Weaning Kittens

Nickie - This is Nickie. She likes to run after our feet and attack. If you can call it attacking. LOL! She is too cute!

I have heard that Kittens are usually weaned from momma Kitty at around Four weeks. Our kitties will be four weeks on sunday. What and how can we help in this process. How do we fix their food? What about cat litter. I know they will be able to use the box soon too. Any help would be great!

i don't do absolutely anything, the mother usually has the kittens weened at 6 weeks, 4 weeks is too early, they'll be missing important nutrients, and in the 63 cats i've had and bread and worked with i've only seen 2 batches of kittens have to go without milk before 6 weeks, and with that i made them some special recipe so they would still get what they need. All you can really do is start feeding them soft canned kitten food, but only if they want it, just dip their noses into it a tad and then let them go on their way. also make sure there's a little bowel of water out, big enough for them to get into but small enough they won't get into it (but i'm sure you know that :P) the littler box, mum should show them where it is, and in a couple of weeks if their not going in the box you just need to catch them going to the bathroom elsewhere, and move them to the litter box while their going. easy as borched :P it's fun having kittens, gosh, i wonder how many batches i've had... :P

Are your kittens has a mommy, if they don't have, well, i remember, i let my kittens to be in a hot place, i always put a blanket to prevent them from getting cold. Me, i bought a dropper, so i when i will be feeding them it is not be very difficult. Sometimes i hold them to have them a warm feeling. I bought a milk like the ones for human, baby milk, like Bonna. I just love to take care of them, although you will be feeling so irratible coz in the middle of the night they are crying in chorus, like you don't know who will be the first one to be feed first. But when you started to love them, you have this kind of unconditional care for them, like your the mother of them. I experienced that many times, and some of them are big cats right now. Congrats me.You can do it also.

No, no, no - 4 weeks is too early! Momma cats will naturally wean the kittens themselves around 6-8 weeks. I've seen them take as long as 10 weeks. It's very traumatic on a kitten to wean them too early. On teaching them to use the litter box. Make sure you have one low enough they can climb into. Just set them in the box. Instinct will take over and they'll scratch around and figure it out pretty fast. It's best if you have the kittens in a confined area, like in your laundry room or a spare bedroom. You don't want them using your entire house for one big litter box until they're litter box trained. For food, try soaking some dry food in milk. Or you can offer them canned food. Once they're eating the soft food good, you can offer them dry food too. They're pretty smart and will pick it up fast. Hope this helps? :)

Oh hun they need to be atleast 6 weeks old to start. They still need all the nutrients from mom right now. When they are 6 weeks then get kitten food. Soften it with warm water for about a min. Then give it to them. Do this 3-4 times a day. They will eventually start eating only the food. Once they are 8-9 weeks they can start eating solid kitten food. Good Luck!!! You dont want to introduce them to a litter box till there 6 weeks as well. You put them in the box after they eat. If they poop somewhere else, pick it up and put it in the box. This will give them the hint that thats where it goes. They will get it! Good Luck!!

I have 5 kittens that are about 6 weeks old and at 4 weeks I started them on dry food that had been soaked in water for about 30 minutes. Now they are getting to where they are eating the dry hard cat food. I've noticed that momma cat has been spending less and less time with them. She will only lay down to feed them for a few minutes and then takes off. You definitely need a small litter box. My kittens have been using it for about 2 weeks now.

Mother cat will do the weaning, but you can start to give them more solid food now,and water mother will also teach them when they are ready to go into the litter box. You'll see now that she will start to spend less time with them. But she will spend time with them teaching and feeding them.

We just had kittens. The books say they will be ready between 8-12 weeks before they can be taken away from their mother. At about 6 weeks the bigger ones started eating from the kitten food we had out. At 7 weeks the momma cat started teaching them to use the litter box. At 8 weeks they were ready to eat and drink on their own but still fed from the momma cat a couple times a day. At 9 weeks she started feed them less from her. At 10 weeks she removed herself from their area and only came in like twice a day to let them eat. By 12 weeks she had them completely off of her. She did all the work and the kittens all turned out great and healthy. Make sure you feed the momma cat kitten food too because it has more nutriants to keep her up for them eating. Again not to worry momma cat will teach them all they need to know and she will wean them herself.

Wait until about 6 weeks to have them weaned. But start now by trying to get them to try soft and wet foods. Have a litter box near by or if you see them looking around, take them so they know where to go. The mother will do the majority of the work for you. If she goes to the litter box, they will usually follow and learn by example. The same with food. She just had kittens, so she needs nutrients too. If they see mommy eating something, they'll have to eat it to just to try to get into something. Curiousity will work to your advantage. Have fun with the kittens!

Actually, I think it is better to wait 'til 5 weeks to start weaning babies. You give them hard food soaked in milk to soften it and offer it several times through the day. They'll get the idea. As for the litter, keep a small litter box with them. I always got the cut-down boxes from cases of cans of veggies or soup from a store. If they are really small just put a plastic bag down with litter on it.
