Why so many shootings?

It's beginning to scare me how close to home shootings are getting lately. I've always seen my little rural Idaho as a safe haven. A few months back there were two shootings in Salt Lake City in one day. Last weekend there was a shooting at the hometown of the University of Idaho where three were killed (a police officer, a church-keeper, and the assailant's wife; plus he shot himself). I can't find any free news sources accurately covering the event, but it was a tragic event. What is going on lately? It seems like shooting people in public is becoming the cool thing to do.
