when your child will have his or her birthday celebration, do you bake a cake especially for him or do you just buy cakes from the bakeshop? what do you think is better? to bake a cake just for him/her or to just have a custom made cake from the local bakeshop? :)

I have to say that i really enjoy baking and more so when i bake with my boys. I've baked their birthday cakes before. Theoretically it is the ideal to bake their cakes for them. However, when you have a birthday party that caters to 20 odd children with their parents, it is really a challenge. I've been ordering their birthday cakes since 4 years ago. And let me tell you that is one humongous load off my mind. I do however, decorate the cakes myself. I feel that i can do a better job as it is more personalised. My boys get to choose the theme all the time. Later in June, it will be 'Secret Agent' theme. The cake? Plain chocolate cake covered with brown coloured marzipan. Dark brown icing that traces the outline of an envelope. Right on top of the cake with Screaming Yellow marzipan, the word " CONFIDENTIAL". - Lyn

Yes i surely do enjoy baking. My boys love getting 'dirty' and of course licking their fingers clean of all the chocolate fudge mix. To start baking, you should try Betty Crockers Easy Bakes. They have Devil's Chocolate, Vanilla, Strawberry, muffins, cakes, and many more. They are the easiest to bake. My boys (aged 3 and 6) only use those to bake because instructions are easy to read. The ingredients that you need to add are also found in any kitchen. Try them out. You might just get hooked on baking. Cheers! - Lyn

I am the cake baker in the family everyone comes to be in my family to make the cakes becuase I love decorating them and do a pretty decent job at it. The times that I don't get to bake the cake and they do buy a store bought one it just goes to waste not many in my family like the store bought ones. So the dogs and whatever else end up with it. I personally think they are nothing better then a homemade cake. Plus you also know whats in it and it is just more moisty and not dry like some store bought ones and plus it is more special when it is made by you.

It takes like two minutes to whip up a cake mix especially with a mixer or whisk and it can be cooking while you eat dinner or even make dinner and be done fast within 35 minutes or faster if your usiong the smaller pans and ice them after they cool kids love cake and you can make it lowfat even by using egg subsitute and maybe applesauce for the oil I have a recipe like that floating around somewhere. I find the easiest cakes to make are the boys cakes you can use mist colors and spray on different colors to the cake then just buy and put on action figures, cars, trucks, etc.. and they can have the toys to play with afterwards. I nicknamed my niece tazz after the cartoon charactor Tazz and So for her 13th birthday I did a tazz cake for her everyone loved it. It was some of my best work.. Took me over two hours to make it and frost it. Gotta have love and patience to frost these special cakes they are always wanting now days..lol

yes i do agree. we gotta have a lot of patience to be able to come up with a cake. lolz. :) and one more thing that i agree with you, kids do seem to care more about how the cake looks like rather than what it tastes like. lolz. :)

I have not baked any birthday cakes for my two kids yet. Normally, I will just get the cake from the bakery. I guess the main reason is that I have no confidence that it will turn out to be as nice as those sold at the cake shop.

hello there. :) well, at least you still try to have cakes for your kids. the most important thing is your effort to make them happy, even if its a home made cake or a bake from the bakery. :) lolz. :)

My son is 2yrs and he hates sweets, cakes, chocolates and in one way iam lucky as he doesnot eats the chocolates and when there was a birthday we used to get the cake from the bakery and i think the one which is made at homa is the best one and may sometimes the bakery items may be of old stock and are very high in the calories, wher if we make it in home we can prepare it keeping mind about the fat, calories and all.

Personally I think that if you bake a cake that is so much more precious, teh effort that you put in shows your love. But nowadays kids seem to prefer those fancy cakes that look like micky mouse or whatever,so if my child's happier with that then I would buy a cake.

yeah, you're right. a home baked cake is really more precious because you put a lot of effort in it but if the child really wants those cartoony kind of cakes, then maybe its just right that you buy a cake instead. :)

I believe you don't have kids, do you? Well, I don't! But if I had one, I'd definitely buy a very tasty and beautiful cake instead of making an awful looking and tasteless one! It's not that I wouldn't put some effort on it. It's just that I really suck when I try to cook. :D

I would have love to but then i just don't know how...for the birthday of my daughter we just bought a cake from the bakeshop but i was the one who chose it and it is like custom made..it turned out well and my kid liked it very much. Maybe few years from now when i already finished attending seminars on baking and if i have perfected my baking and cooking skills. That would be fun.

We are not a parent yet, but yes, i would definately enjoy baking one for my child. its the love, the devotion that matters or counts , i think, because where ever you live, there is alwayz a best baker N confectioner's shop where you can easily order a get the best of your choice cake. but being a parent and making for your child is something out of the world, that feeling is out of the world, the emotions that are attached when you make it, the feelings that you carry while baking it , the love which oozes out while serving it..................... these are the things that counts. who will not want that..... if i am the one, i think i will feel very lucky and very proud on that day.

yes, i agree with you aweins. :) i have this desire to cook, and luckily, i am successful cooking viands and rice and other main dishes but when it comes to baking, i think i am not so good at it. lolz. maybe i need a lot of practice and patience to be able to make a perfect cake. lolz. :P

yeas, i do agree, if i had a child, i think it would be better if i went and baked the cake for him/her. but you have a point too, why force yourself to bake a cake when you dont know how? the child would just be surprised to see the cake all mushy or deformed. :P lolz. :)

My family loves it when I bake for them and seem to think I'm treating the event with less importance if I present a store bought cake. Especially my oldest son - he'll ask right in the middle of birthday parties why the cake isn't home made. :)

I bought my son's first birthday cake - they offered a discount if it was for a first birthday :-) I have made the cakes for all the other birthdays since (him and his little sister.) I like to be creative and it is cheaper.

I love to bake, and my mother taught me to do the cartoony type cakes from scratch, so that's what I do. My son loves to "help" make them, lol. They have awesome molds and pans at Cake Create. They're easy and don't take much longer than baking and decorating a cake from a box or driving to get one, so that's what I do. Although if my son wanted a cake he saw at a store and I couldn't convince him to let me make it, I'd have no problem just buying the cake. Every once in a while anyway. I just don't like all the crap they put in those cakes now. Find a nice mom and pop bakery and you're good, lol. Blessed Be
