Unsubscribe to unwanted emails - a scam?

You know how we always receive these junk emails telling us that we subscribed to them or some of their promotional partners. They always clog up our email space and are a pain to delete.
Most of these emails have an unsubscribe button at the end. I have always unsubscribed using that feature but i find often times that this is just a ploy - it gives them confirmation that this email exists and they keep sending more junk.
Have any of you experienced this? Do you also think these emails are a nuisance? What can be done for such emails?

You're absolutely right about spam. Everyone has an unsubscribe link, but a spammer will only start sending you more junk than ever, because they know you actually looked at it.
One solution that works quite well is MailWasher (I recommend the Pro version, but the free version works too), which provides you the "opt-out" that works. It bounces messages you don't want back to the senders, inconveniencing them and making your email account appear inactive. They will remove you from their lists when this happens, and quickly.
Another solution is Challenge-Response, where only messages from whitelisted senders reach your inbox. The rest go to a pending folder, where they stay until: a) They respond to a challenge, verifying they are human b) You personally add the sender to your whitelist c) You add the sender to your blacklist, banning the address permanently d) The message is automatically cleaned after 7 days or whatever the provider's time frame is.

I'm glad I could be of help. I wrote about this on CNET awhile back. My article was well received; you might like to have a look at it, to get a better idea of what does what: http://reviews.cnet.com/5208-3513_7-0-10.html?forumID=104&messageID=2409256&threadID=222541 Thanks for the best response! :)

By the way, I also suggest you use a web rating tool like McAfee SiteAdvisor or TrendProtect, and don't submit your e-mail address on any site that doesn't have a green rating. Also, don't post your e-mail address in a forum. And finally, I suggest migrating away from Yahoo!. They have the largest user database, making them the biggest target for data mining. If you use Yahoo!, you're more likely to be found by spammers, and you're more likely to have your account hijacked for spamming.

If you get a lot of junk email and are tired of reading or deleting them, one way is to open a new email account, and then inform those whom you wish to communicate with about your new account. Then you can have a brand new clean account without the junk.
As to the current account, you can either delete it after porting over all the emails that are still useful to keep, or keep the account alive but don't bother with the spam emails that keep coming into it. Once a while, log in to see if you still get any useful email there.

Hi bindishah, yes I have experienced these junk emails. Like you did, I often unsubscribed them but they keep on coming. There is one that I have unsubscribed many, many times (my points bonus mails) but it has repeatedly came back to my email address. How annoying. I didnt know that by unsubscribing them actually confirming our emails address. Thanks for your info. I think also these emails are a nuisance. It is best we just delete such emails without even bothering to unsubcribe. Over a period of time, I think they will eventually stop sending. My junk mails have lessen after I did this.

That's what I've heard. It shows them your e-mail is still actrive. The best thing to do is delete them without opening them. I have tryed this and it does work but it does take along time. just keep deleting, though.

Yea I get this a lot to. I always try to do the unsubscribe thing. They usually say it can take up to a week to get you off of their l mailing list. I don't know why it should take that long. Those things should be automated. So while you are waiting to get off of their list, they keep sending more mails. I think the only solution to this is to set your email to only accept mails that are on your contact list. That is a pain though.

Yeah its definitely a pain. And most of the times this just gives these spammers an excuse to send more email now that they know this email id exists.

Definitely unsubscribe! If you remember subscribing to a newsletter, that's one thing. But, the partners emails scam is totally bogus. Though I do know that most special offers nowadays do have a special box that you can check to receive partner emails or not. So, next time you're signing up for some freebie online be sure to leave that box unchecked. These companies sell or rent your email address, but they have to tell you about it up front. Ordinarily people don't just share your email address...it's just not done. So if a company wants to forward your email to a "partner" they have to warn you first. That's true from my experience

Thank you for your response. Next time Ill definitely check for any side bar regarding sharing email addresses with their partners. Thanks for the tip.
