Do they know how? How old were they? Did you teach them? Did they take swimming lessons? Is it important in your area for people to know how to swim?
I live in Florida right off the Gulf of Mexico, there is water everywhere! My oldest daughter is almost 3, I would like for her to know how to swim by the age of 4. It is important here, I didnt learn til I was 8 and all my friends knew how to swim.
If your kids dont know how to swim do you have any future plans to teach them, if so how old would you like them to be?

i dont have any kids, but when i grew up i started learning to swim when i was 2, (that was unaided with a parent holding me constantly) as i loved water.
and the rest of my brothers and sisters were ages about 3-7 when learning as they didnt have as much interest as i did but my parents made sure they learnt how to swim it really is an important thing in life, even if its just for your life safety

Bothe my kids were almost 5 years old when they started with their swimminglessons. Here in Holland that's the normale age to start with the lessons. Before the age of 5 they don't seem to have enough coordination and strenght to learn it good enough. My sisters daughter was 3 years old when so went to a private swimmingschool. She had to stop becaurse it had no use at that age. Offcaurse you can start by giving her lessons yourself. The problem with that is that you start to learn her the wrong way and that will be harder to learn otherwise.

I tried to get my son to swim at six, he refused to learn, by the time he was 9 he was jumping off diving boards.

Hello, babycurl,I do not have any children but I think it is important to teach them how to swim when they are young.I learned how to swim when I am 8 years old, I did not have swimming lessons as my parents taught me that time.
I think it is important to learn how to swim in Sydney as there are some many wonderful beaches here,if you can swim, you will have more fun at the beach in the summer time.

My kids learn to swim when they were about 4-8 years old. They just learn by themselves by swimming regularly in the pool one summer. It's a good idea to have your kids learn how to swim. There are a lot of kids die due to drowning. So it's an advantage if they know how to swim.

We have an above ground swimming pool in our backyard. It is four feet deep all the way around. We moved in when my eldest daughter was three and I was pregnant with my second. With my oldest she saw everyone swimming so she eventually took the leap and started to swim. My youngest has been swimming since she was an infant.
Our yard is actually on a bit of a slope. Standing outside the pool at the far end, the top of the pool is above my chest, at the top of the slope it reaches about mid-thigh. One day my husband and I were cleaning the pool. I was inside it doing who knows what. Our toddler was standing on the grass. We weren't paying attention to her. She was in a diaper. She climbed into the pool. Thank God she climbed right into a styrofoam ring and began kicking her way across the pool. We were very lucky.
So to answer your question, my eldest daughter learned at three and my youngest has been swimming since she was a baby. Actually, come to think of it, when I had my first baby I moved into a basement apartment of a house and they had a pool that I had use of. So my eldest has been swimming since she was an infant as well. She just had a break for awhile and had to be coaxed back into the water. Neither of them took lessons but it KNOW it is important for everyone to learn how to swim. Anything can happen in the blink of an eye. Even if a storm hits and your street becomes flooded, you may need to know how to swim. It's important for everyone.

My daughter learned last Summer when she was 5. She just learned on her own though, My parents have an in-ground pool and we spent alot of time there in the Summer. One day she accidentally jummpped off of the diving board without her arm floaties on so she figured it out =) Probably not the best way but she can swim now =) You could look into getting your daughter swiiming lessons, I am sure they offer then to little kids, I remember taking them when I was really little.....but I never learned how to swim. I think I was too bust looking at the boys =)

In our family, we start really young. We were always thrown into a pool (with adult supervision of course) as babies so we'd get used to the water. Babies are natural swimmers. I took formal swimming lessons when I was about 8 but I already knew how to swim by then.
I think 3 or 4 is okay, but kids should learn how to love the water as early as possible, so that they'll have an easier time taking lessons later.
Hope your daughter likes swimming the way I did when I was a kid :)
