Ok so I guess this is somewhat of a rant for me. I'm a bit anoyed because people seemed to have forgotten the true reason for Memorial day. Everyone seems to think its just another day to BBQ and catch everything on sale and its really starting to piss me off. Its a day of rememberance and refletion, not a day to go shopping and be retarded. We should spend it remembering those who have laid down their lives to protect this country and its people. We should be remembering the families of those that have passed on. Instead its just another day for shopping and acting like spoiled kids. How did the true meaning of this day get lost and how do we go about getting it back?

My husband is a Marine. Everyday is a day of remembrance for us. This Memorial Day is one of the very few holidays where we're actually going to be able to spend it together. So, please excuse us while we go spend some quality family time on the beach. I don't think it's fair to judge others for the way they choose to spend their time. If people want to go all out and spend their money, have a BBQ, catch the sales, I'd be fine with that.

But isn't that the same with any other event? Christmas, Easter, Thanksgiving, etc. It's not all about presents, Easter Bunny, Turkeys, etc. but yet majority of the people just enjoy the commercialized aspect without really understanding and truly appreciating the true meaning of these dates.

So just cause everyone else does it makes it ok? No it doesn't make it right and no its not right for them to do it to any of the other holidays either. But its not easter or thanksgiving or any of those so I'm not focused on them right now. I'm worried about the holiday we are at right now.

I totally agree with you. It's not right. Unfortunately, that is the sad truth. It's different for us I guess cos' we're a military family and we appreciate all that those before us have done and sacrificed and are still doing. And I guess it's different for people who have been through those war times or have lost dear ones. Then they would see things from a different light.

I know what you mean. We spend the day at home with family and mostly remembering the family members we lost those that came back and enjoying our time with those that will be going (brother 2nd tour of Iraq in Oct). The whole shopping thing is a bit puzzling to me as well, but each’s own I reckon. Corporations are not going to miss a minute of extra sells, so I see why they push it. They can care less why the majority are off work, as long as they can squeeze an extra dime out of someone, they are happy.

You are completely right the meaning of Memorial day AND Veterans Day has been lost somewhere along the line. These two days are supposed to honor our men and women protecting our country. I don't mind the cook-outs and a get together as much as I do the sales and shopping stuff that use the day to get more money out of people. It's like making the meaning of the fight less important.

I'm with you. The stores should be closed on Memorial day. What bothers me more is the people who use this day as an excuse to get drunk and party. I remember as a child going to parties and wondering if anyone was going to take the time to mention why we were gathered together.

I'm away from my family, and really appreciate that the kids will be planting flags at the National Cemetery and going to an early memorial.
Even the active duty troops forget the meaning and "he haw" about appreciating the sacrifices from those who came before.
Just talking about the day doesn't do much good. Getting out to the services, memorials, and other community events means so much to the older generation of veterans. Bring the kids...they learn from example....

I completely agree with you there. It means a lot to them when we teach our kids about those that came before us and those that never made it home.
