can i plug my landline handset in to the phone port of my modem

my modem has 2 ports 1 for line and 1 for phone does this mean that i can run an ordinary phone through my pc?

yes you are exactly right; you can plug the phone in phone port and line to the line port; your phone will work poperly when net is not connected!
