birth control pills and weight gain

I know the pill has had a little bit to do with my weight gain over the last 18 years but I have the opportunity to stop taking them because my husband is getting the dreaded procedure in a few weeks. Should I go cold turkey with the pill when it is safe or slowly wean my self.
