I just received an email saying that it is best to eat fruits in an empty stomach instead of dessert before your meals. Do you agree with this?

I think there is an advantage and disadvantage. Fruits, even if how delicious, has still the sour taste and if eaten with an empty stomach, we might get stomach ache instead of the desired delight and satisfaction that we expect to feel. May be it's good to eat fruits with an empty stomach for some enzyme in the fruits to function well. I think if we feel good to eat fruits with an empty stomach, then eat in order to have the enzymes work well. But if we would have stomach ache, so then why eat. I think the nutrients are still there and the enzymes could work even if we eat fruits when our stomach is not empty.

Yes, I agree with this. I have read an article here in Singapore that the best time to eat your fruit is with an empty stomach before a meal.
It works for me. Now, I can eat all the fruits I want during meals without feeling bloated.
