I was raised in a baptist church and of course there the main message we were taught was to repent our sins and to be baptised. My wife was raised in a pentacostal church and while they feel that you must repent and be baptised they also think that you must recieve the holy spirit and talk in tongues as the next step to your path on the way to heaven. My grandmother was Catholic and I have attended mass at times too but that opens a whole other can of worms. So in all this I have to wonder what everyone else thinks? I am hoping that this doesnt turn into my way is better arguement, I just want to know how important is the holy spirit to you in your Christian life?

I never heard of needing the holy spirit for going to heaven.I know Jesus is the way.
But i think that believing in Jesus and God will take you to heaven and not the holy spirit.I do know that when you believe in Jesus and God you will be renewed and than you will be fulfilled with the holy spirit.(please correct me if i'm wrong.)

Different churches express it differently, but eyewitness, you pretty well have hit on what I have been taught, what I have experienced, and what I believe. The Holy Spirit is not always manifested by the speaking in tongues, that was an appropriate, and needed miracle of that day. It does happen today, as well, but is not necessary. The Holy Spirit is the comforter or the paraclete, who walks along side you, assuring you of God's presence in your life, and causing you to live as his child.

Ok gotta do this again, Hope it did not post twice, anyway I was saying that I too was raised in a BAptist Church for 38 years. Now I attend at a Penecostal Church....go figure....anyway the point I am trying to make is that I do not think God would mind where you ask for forgiveness from, Just as long as you ask.

Thanks for the reply and sorry you had to do it two times. I would like to ask you a personel question if you dont reply I wont mind, since you have now switched to a pentecostal church do you feel like you are more on the right track by having the holy spirit? That is assuming you have had the holy spirit come onto you.

Excellent question and one I am interested in too. I do not believe that our baptism can be divided up, Pentacostal churches baptise in the Holy Spirit. I also believe that "speaking in tongues" is too open to abuse and the Bible says should not be practiced unless there is someone to interpret. I recently walked out of a church service where the Pastor started "speaking in tongues" from the platform. I do not need an outwardly show of how "worthy" they are.

Found it :) 1 Corinthians 14:27,28
If anyone speaks in a tongue, two—or at the most three—should speak, one at a time, and someone must interpret. 28.If there is no interpreter, the speaker should keep quiet in the church and speak to himself and God.

But the Bible tells us that the Father, the Son (Jesus Christ) and the Holy Spirit are ONE. It's called trinity, right? How come we accept only Jesus and not the Holy Spirit? I believe that we have to have the Holy Spirit too just as we have Jesus in our hearts so we can be saved.

You ask a perfectly valid question. The book of Corinthians talks about gifts of the Holy Spirit. They include speaking in foreign tongues, interpreting foreign tongues, prophesying, healing... Pentecostals build their central doctrine around the day of Pentecost, when people were filled with the Holy Spirit, and began speaking in tongues as the Spirit gave the utterance.
In Corinthians, we are told, "But the greatest of these is love." In addition, Jesus tells us that the greatest commandment is to "love the Lord your God with all your heart and all your mind and all your strength, and love your neighbor as yourself." Also, don't forget that the Jews, God's chosen people, don't get baptized; they get circumcised.
Finally, one of the two thieves crucified next to Jesus looked at Him and said, "Remember me when you get into your Father's kingdom." Jesus replied to him, "Believe me I tell you today, you will be with me in paradise."
Baptism is a public declaration of your faith. We are supposed to make this move at some point in our lives, but not everyone gets to. Tomorrow is not promised to us. No, baptism is not the determining factor of salvation or no salvation. Hope this helps!

This has turned into a good discussion, and as far as I read, no disrespect has been dropped into it! This is your witness to us, and our witness to others. I believe there will be many people, of many denominations in Heaven, and they will worship the Lord in many ways. Some of them will be surprised to see each other. God has a sense of humor and a very big heart. When God's people fight among themselves, Satan wins. I am not going to let him win. As I said before, this is a good post.

I believe that when you ask Jesus into your life as your personal Lord and Savior, then you receive the Holy Spirit. The Lord then dwells within you and the Holy Spirit guides you thru life.
I believe that we all should be baptised, but this is a symbol of our faith as Christians.
The Trinity is God the Father, Son and the Holy Ghost. They are all God, but in different forms. You cannot have Christ in your heart and not have the Holy Spirit. They are together.

according to the bible, it's so important, because no one in the bible without holy spirit, all people in the bible walking with holy spirit, if we can receive it, why we don't accept it? so we loss nothing if we open with holy spirit.

Hello Evan!
I was raised a Freewill Baptist but my family and I have been attending a Southern Baptist church for several years now. I truly believe that when we are saved God fills us with his Holy Spirit at that time. We can feel His Spirit with us in our daily lives and I feel that that is a way we have assurance of our salvation. God Bless You Dear Brother!! :)

holy spirit is a comforter, a teacher, an instructor, he convicts, empowers, guides, correct and directs. once you have accepted and received jesus into your life, the holy spirit is released into your life to do all these stated above. he will guide you into all truth and help you to make heaven. thanks

So you are a Baptist, right? Me too!!! I am a Baptist and I am proud of that! And isn't it so glad to find someone who have the same religion here in myLot?
Anyways, about your question, yeah, I believe that it is very important that we have the Holy Spirit in our hearts before we enter the kingdom of heaven. The Bible tells us that to be saved, first thing is to accept Jesus Christ as your personal Lord and Savior. And weren't we told that the Father, the Son (Jesus Christ) and the Holy Spirit are one? It's called trinity and Baptists believe in that. So you cannot say that you have Jesus in your heart but not the Holy Spirit because they are ONE.

Wow! What a loaded question...but a great one. So many Christians do not understand the Bible because they cannot due to the translation of the Word. The Bible was originally written in Greek and Hebrew. You must get back to the original words to understand their meanings. You can purchase an Interlinear Bible and a good Concordance to help with this. Baptism is the word "Bapto" which means to "cover with a stain or dye". The Jewish people were not Baptised...but to speak in the temple, a gentile had to undergo a Prostilite Baptism. Some people thought Jesus wasn't Jesus wasn't a Jew, therefore, he underwent this baptism. John the Baptist was baptising Gentiles for forgiveness of their sins (making them spiritual Jews). Speaking in tongues is a whole other topic. Tongues is the words "glossa" which is foriegn language and "dialektos" which is dialect. All the deciples were doing was speaking in the different languages of the Jews who had come back for the feast. They had been scattered and when they came together, they had difficulty sharing the word because of the different languages and dialects that they now spoke. Only God can "birth" us. We have no choice in the matter. Read John 1:13, 6:44, Eph. 2:8. There are so many verses that explain this. I was raised Baptist. I am so thankful that I now call myself only "Christian". Study for yourself and follow no false doctrines. We are in the last days and the world in full of false doctrines, just as the word predicted that it would be.

Thank you for your reply, As I stated earlier I should have worded it better. What I was trying to ask was not so much about the holy spirit but talking in tongues as a sign of the holy spirit. As I said there were always times in my life that I felt God was leading me in a certain dirrection (unfortunately most of the time I was too stubborn to listen) but is that the holy spirit or is it something more and is talking in tongues part of having the holy spirit in you. I guess next time I will think more thoroughly before I ask the question to make sure I get the answers I am looking for.
