Okay gang, here is today's quote,
What do you understand from this quote by Eric Hoffer
"In times of change, learners inherit the earth, while the learned find themselves beautifully equipped to deal with a world that no longer exists."
hint: learners and learned do not mean the same in this quote.
a best response will give me an explanation for learned, and an explanation for learners.
I will post the answer, after enough discussion has come in,
and of course after you have explained your answer,
do you agree or disagree?

I think what Hoffer means in this quote is that we are living in the information age. There is unlimited information everywhere at our disposal and it is only a matter of utilizing these information in the right way can we gain true wisdom.
Wisdom, which we have come to know of as education is no longer limited to facts contained in the textbooks and inside the classrooms. The institutions(schools, universities, etc.) cannot provide this wisdom any more than the outside world, the real world. We are not bound by the same norms that the old generations have accepted as true and valid, which is to graduate with high grades in a reputable school and later on find a satisfying job.
Today, most people don't get to graduate on time, if at all. Nevertheless, these are the same people who have succeeded and most are on top of their league. Education in this generation, though still relevant does not anymore ensure success.

Okay, I'll give it a shot. Don't laugh at me if I'm wrong. lol
I think learners are people who continue to try new things and are inquisitive, discussing ideas, and such. They don't sit complacently by.
The learned are people who have finished their educations and aren't interested in furthering themselves. They aren't interested in others ideas or in reading or continuing their education and expanding their horizons.
At least that's what I got from the quote.
Regards!

I agree.
We should always open ourself to learn new hings, new processes and we do this throughout life. No one can say they don't learn because life throws something new up each day and we learn to cope and deal with that.

I think the learned are those with a degree, certificate or something, that says they are knowledgeable and competent in a specific area. These are people often touted as 'expert'.
A learner is one who has some knowledge of a lot of things, a person who continues to learn new things.
Going with those definitions the learner will be more adaptable, he/she will find ways to make things work in unfamiliar circumstances. He will realize that new ideas and ways are needed to cope with the unknown. The learned on the other hand will be trying to make the circumstances fit their knowledge instead of the opposite way around.

In this world, nothing is constant except change. If the learned won't accept changes since they have learned it all, the world will pass them by. However, if one is continuously seeking for new learnings and open to new ideas, he would never get stagnant and the whole world is out there for the taking.

In the quote learned means the older generation, who has the knowledge to tackle problems of their age, but cannot cope up with changes. They will be more conventional.
Learners means the new generation, that is the youth, who will inherit the earth. They are not so conventional. They will be more open and receptive. They can tune themselves with the changes.
I think this gives an ample explenation to your question.
Thank you.
