Okay, the eternal question. Do you prefer cats? or dogs?

For the longest time, my wife and I just had cats. her family always had a cat when she was growing up, and my family always did. So it just seemed natural for us to have a cat. Now, she brought with her an orange tabby named Tiger who had more attitude than most people. And fur. LOTS of fur. And we loved her. However, when we moved several states away, my wife's dad took the cat because she was very very old, and does not travel well. My wife had had that cat for about 19 years. yeah. wow. and the old biddy is still kicking. However, since having to give up Tiger, we didn't get another animal for about 2 years. and what did we get? a cat that barks. no. seriously. We ended up with a small long hair Chihuahua. Daisy. She's just like a big cat, that barks and likes to chew on her squirrel. So, really, we're cat, and dog people. What about you? What do you think?

Oh, I feel for you because of the allergies. My father in law, well, okay, i guess it's stepfather in law, is allergic to cats, so they have dogs. Which is fine with my mother in law, but i think it would break my wife's heart to never have another cat. They're very similiar to her in personality, LOL. Very playful and affectionate at times, and then every once in a while, the curl up with the don't touch me look!! But dogs are fun, too. And also very affectionate. And people don't look at you as oddly if you're walking a dog on a leash. Have you ever seen anyone walk a cat on a leash? :)

I am definately a cat person. I like some dogs... but I don't think I'd ever want to own a dog again. My parents always had dogs when we were growing up. I have noticed dogs always have a smell - even when they've just had a bath. I don't like that they jump, drool, or lick either. I mean the fact that they follow you around is cute - but my cat does that too. She waits for me by the door, she sleeps with me. But she doesn't stink, or drool and only occassionally licks.

Growing up we always had a cat. I still have a cat. For about a year though my husband and I had a chihuahua. That dog drove me crazy, she was so hard to train! She was always trying to crawl on top of me and required ALOT of attention. When my son was born we gave her to friends because I couldn't give all her all the attention she needed or deal with her 'accidents' with a newborn in the house. I still have the cat though. So I guess I consider my self a cat person, mainly because they are lower maintence to me. But I think that if I had had a dog that was easier to train than a chihuahua, I'd be a dog person too.

I guess we're very lucky then, we've got a long haired chihuahua, but she's VERY easy going, and follows commands very well. I was originally a little leery of taking her b/c i'm not a small yappy dog kind of guy, but she's been great. my wife jokes that she's just a cat who barks. we've got a cat also, but honestly, before getting the dog we'd always been cat people. They're more self sufficient, i dont' have to worry that we've been gone for six hours, what am i going to come home to? And cats will let you know when they want attention. dogs ALWAYS want attention. So we've got both, and i love my dog, but honestly, we're probably cat people also.

No, you're right, cats are a lot easier to take care of than dogs!! A lot less high maintenance. And I'll admit...when we got a cat again, i went out and bought a littermaid. My wife was like...you spent 90 bucks on this???? but i love that thing. LOL AAAhhh, it's just one more way for a cat owner to be lazy. :)

I think it depends on the people and the animals. I sold many puppies to people who had already one or severals cats in the house. There were never problems.
Way back when I was not so lucky. I had a terrier them and the older cat who came to live with us did not fit into our household. The cat didn`t get along with the terrier and she really was after our parakeet, too. So we passed the cat on to friends and our world was ok again. I like cats but not every dog and cat get along.

Thats what we were concerned with when we got our new cat. She was great with our son, but for the first couple of days it was an all out war between her and the dog. Now they play together, and tolerate each others presence the rest of the time. We're very lucky in that. To most people who want to mix pets, i recommend getting them as kittens and puppies, that way they grow up together.
