When you first post a article on helium, why is it not put at the very bottom of the scale for ranking. It hasn't been rated yet, so I don't see how it could be ranked better than some that have been posted for a while.
Example:
I just posted an article and it was place in 57th place out of 113 articles. Why does helium do this?
I'm not complaining! I'm just wondering how they work that out. Thanks!

They place all new articles in the middle of the ratings to be as fair as possible. If it were on the bottom, it would take a lot of ratings by a lot of people to move it to the top, even if it were excellent quality and the same with putting it on the top - if it were really bad, it would take a while to get it to the bottom. In the center, it has a better chance of being moved to its fair ranking.

probably for every article you submit, it's given a specific rank depending on how many there are. If your article is compared with ones that are ranked amongst the best, it is pushed forward and if it is ranked lower than the worst, it's pushed backward... my own little theory.

It seems to me that someone has probably already ranked some of the other articles in each topic, otherwise they would have no ranking. Usually it does seem that a new article starts around the middle of the rankings, though I have seen a few articles in very small topics (i.e. 2-4 articles written) start out as number 1.
I don't usually mind too much when I see my articles start out with a high ranking. Either they will stay on top, or they will eventually settle down to their appropriate ranking. :)
