I hate taking pills.
When I do not get sleep one night, I avoid taking afternoon nap (30 to 45 minutes), I increase my exercise time from 45 minutes to 1 hour and by evening I am tired and I get a good sleep. One should also try to suspend the worries before getting into bed by jotting down worries as things to do (to remove worriesw).

My father-in-law is a doctor for the past 60 years and he has been our advisor. Whenever such problems like insomnia is noticed, we have in Ayurveda (traditional system of medicine) we follow it and avoid taking pills. You should not be desperate. There are millions who are suffering from insomnia but all of them at not taking pills as final destination. Probably you lack exposure to other systems of medicine and hence your conclusion. I only tried to explain from my point of view and I am not in a position to help you with suggestions without knowing exact social conditions and reasons.

no, i have never tried taking sleeping pills at all. although i have always been suffering from insomnia, i have tried things like taking a glass of warm chocolate milk before bedtime, having massages to calm my muscles down, and applying liniments and cold rub before bedtime. there are also some herbal leaves which i heat at the stove top and then place at the chest and back. it gives a soothing effect. as i lay down in bed i keep my mind free from all sorts of worries and act as though i am fully asleep. this way, whether i had slept or not, i have rested for the night.
