School uniforms... Are you for or against them?

Our local schools are starting to require uniforms. They state the reason to be that teachers are spending an inordinate amount of time enforcing the current dress code. I like the fact that it would eliminate all the hype about name brands. I dislike that the kids can't wear appropriate clothes that fit their personalities. What do you think?

I am all for uniforms in school. That will give the students a sense of being aqual. Otherwise thre can be asort of competition amongst the parents to end their children in dresses which are better than ther others. So to create an atmosphere of uniformity it is better to havae a uniform is school

I'm all for school uniforms as long as they are basic in nature. When you get into complex patterns or plaids it can make it difficult on the parents to afford them. If they can make it like black pants/skirt and a white shirt of some sort would be easy to buy anywhere and able to eliminate many problems. No it won't really stop the have nots from the haves being obvious. I had a school uniform in a catholic school and trust me we knew who had money, for example in elementary school the girls with money had on the silky tops and tights not knee highs or a basic cotton white blouse. However uniforms do stop the problem of inappropriate clothing.

Against. In my school years i was strictly obligated to wear uggly black dress as uniform. I felt like a nun:-( I still cant understand the idea to be in uniform. The uniforms are something normal at some specific job places, but the students are not employees, they are just young people and need to be different, to be themselves.

I am a parent and a teacher. All the schools I have taught at have had school uniform. However when I was doing my teacher training I taught at a school that did not have any uniform. The headteacher believed that school uniform did not make a better pupil. But in reality some of the children suffered as they were wearing unsuitable clothing. One boy dressed in the same thing for weeks. His clothes had a few holes in and looked dirty. They needed to be washed. A girl had wellington boots on whilst another girl had sandles on her feet. The weather was cold and yet one girl had a summer dress on. The clothes reflected the parent's neglect rather than the children's personalities. On special days the children that normally wear school unifon come to school in ordinary clothes. The boys usually look fine as they come dressed in sensible clothes. Some of the girls wear unsuitable clothes like evening dresses. I think a flexible school uniforn is best, for example balck shoes, black trousers or skirt, white shirt or blouse and a balck jumper. If the uniform is too unusual it is expensive for parents. Some variation is nice so children feel that some of their personality is reflected in what they wear.

I think that school uniforms are a good idea. Kids can dress in what they want after school to express themselves. I would love to go school shopping and pick up a couple of uniforms for each kid. I wash every day anyways, so it would save me a ton of money on school clothes. Now my kids would never wear the same pair of pants or the same shirt in the same week. I tell them that they can because they have been washed, but heaven forbid someone realize they already wore that outfit that week. Uniforms would make my life a lot easier.
