There are always many shortcuts or other icons on your desk top (I suppose most of you are using a visual system:).
Do you arrange those icons yourself or just by auto arrangement?
I prefer to arrange them myself:) I prefer to arrange those icons and build up some pictures. Sometimes a plane, sometimes a dog, and many geomitric shapes. This time, there is a sail on my desk:)
Don't you think that's interesting?

I don't take that much time, but I do arrange the icons on my desktop myself. I figure that I can get them organized, I know exactly where to look. I keep the programs in the bottom left, the file folders at the top, misc. files at the top to the left, and the recycle bin at the bottom right. It's more organization than making pictures/patterns, though.

i put icons on desktop to fasten my work in compie. so, yes, i use auto arrange, i have no time to play around with the desktop.
i dont even have any wallpaper picture, just a plain color in my desktop.
load faster and easier to find icon that i need.
btw, i'm programmer not a designer, that's why i love function more than fashion

It's not just for fashion. Even you concern more about function, you can still do that :)
Devide those shortcuts into different sorts, some on the top, some on the left and... In that way you build your own design and also helpful to your work.
In addition, you can't always focus on your work right? Whenever you're tired ,take a minute to enjoy your own design :)
