Feelings of Martha

I'm curious as to other people's reaction to Martha Jones. I loved her in the first episode, but I feel like the character has been struggling ever since. She's a little too wide-eyed at times (and a little stupid at others) and she's a screamer, which totally turns me off. I have to say that I'm not caring for her falling for the Doctor--I think the character would have been more effective if they had ignored any sort of romantic longing. This is mostly because we just saw the end of a great love story with Rose, so any sort of romantic feelings on Martha's part seem a bit shallow. I do love Tennant's quote about how the Doctor and Rose was a love story without the shagging, because that just sums it up perfectly. So anyway...how do you feel about Martha? Does she seem like she might stick around and grow some substance sometime this century?

She is starting to grow on me. She's no Rose, but I don't hate her. The wide-eyed wonder is getting old and should wear off soon. Hopefully this current story where she's more in control will get rid of some of it.
PS. Her mother's eyebrows drive me NUTS!!!!!

Those eyebrows are awful, aren't they. Her hair is weird too.

Personally, I like her. Not anywhere near as much as Rose, but then everybody is different. I'm not a big fan of the fact that the relationship is blossoming, the idea of Rose falling for the doctor was interesting, and it feels like they are almost trying to carry on the storyline that would have happened if Billie Piper had not decided to leave.
What really bugs me about Martha is actually her mother. Jackie Tyler was annoying at times, (in the ways she was meant to be) but Martha's mother just annoys the daylights out of me, I can't put my finger on exactly why, but she does, and I honestly hope they are going to stop visiting modern day earth (or London at least) so that she's out of the picture as much as possible in season 4.

Yeah, Martha's mom gets on my nerves too. But I kinda like how they're using her not only as a mother but to set some sort of trap. Have we heard if Martha is going to last through season 4? I don't know if I would mind or not--on one hand she's growing on me...I guess I just have to get used to her. The thing is, I was never a huge Rose fan--I liked her, and loved the balance of her and the Doctor--I guess I just didn't realize how much I preferred her until now. I don't dislike Martha--there are just some things about her that I don't like (kinda like how I hated Rose acting jealous).

It will take a good companion to fill Rose's shoes. At first I didn't like Martha but she kind of grew on me. She was good but she seemed a bit to inocent or nieve at times. I also really did not like her mother. She seemed to be even worse then Roses mom.

I think she is ok, and isnt a Rose. She will cotton on to how she dues things, just like rose's quick thinkg. But I feel that so far, the current series is a let down, and the first epsiode was decen and the one with the HeAD OF bO, BUT OTHERWISE IN ALL ITS A LET DOWN.

hi there gaminemadcap, welcome to myLot.
I don't mind her, but I can see what you mean about being too wide eyed at times. I'm not keen on the story line about her falling for the doctor, it's a bit exaggerated and slightly nauseating at times!
Especially after the Rose story. I guess they write it specifically that way to keep up the idea of a love interest, but they don't need to do that. Yeah, I am too hoping that she will grow some substance. I like some things about her, she is alert to a lot of what is going on, but slightly sappy when I think she shouldn't be.

Glad to see I'm not the only one. I've been hoping that she'll grow up a little as the season progresses. But I'm not holding out too much hope :) Ah well, maybe next season we'll have someone new to pick on.

Martha is boring compared to Rose. The romance can never happen, so that story line is cut short, and its a real change from the old show where companions werent romanticly involved. I think Martha is just a bit bland, and I wish she'd have more oppurtunity to use her medical expertise.

I think whatever they try to do with the companions they have to try and do the right thing by the doctors character!
especially now since they have to appeal to new audiences to keep interest sparked alive for new audiences!!

Personally i was never a big rose fan. I loved the show but she got on my nerves too much - she was just too much inner city london towny like to me. She didn't seem to have much substance really! Anyway as for Martha. I like her, but i think there's much to improve. I think the script writers seem confused as to what sort of character she should be. Like one minute she's being very resourceful etc and the next minute being very stupid! I think once she's settled into her character and isn't trying to be everything at once, she'll be much better. I think the love interest she has for the dr is ok, but i think it just came on too quick, it would have been better if they'd slowly developed it really.

I think Martha could be a really good character but she needs some development. I was shocked how much I liked Rose and Martha did seem really promising in the first couple of episodes but her character hasn't changed much, still all the wide eyed looks. I Thought she was better in the last episode when she stood up to the doctor more and showed her angry side.
