Exercise and stretching

Yesterday I got back into my workout routine. I did 20 minutes of cardio (5 minutes each of 4 different activities, strength ladders, extra situps, and then 5 minutes of cardio cooldown. This is a great routine and it was no different than normal. This morning I felt sore when I woke up, but I got up and did a routine of active isolated stretching for my lower body (legs/hips, etc). NOW I feel like I've been crippled. My legs are killing me and I have to go up and down stairs ALOT at work. Has anyone ever experienced extra soreness from separate stretching routines?

Yes, i feel the same. Recently, i got back to exercise too, after several year of inactivity. Outdoor activities are my favourite, mostly riding bike. It's normal you feel that, when you got back to exercise afer a long time stopped.

The strangest part is that I am not exactly an inactive person. I study martial arts and am on the dojo floor every day - but I had gotten away from a strict cardio and weight routine. Your body really does need all different types of exercise!

it is possible you have strained yourself and you are not doing the exercises correctly that happens sometimes.

No strain, just soreness. I do definitely have a buildup of lactic acid in my muscles BUT getting out there and staying active again last night really helped to work that out. Of course, I did another set of stretches last night as well, which got the toxins moving out of my system also!
Thanks for responding to my discussion!

well id be careful you dont get an injury but maybe youre just stiff and didnt realise you were out of shape in certain areas i tore a ligament once and that was very painful i couldnt move but i have felt stiff from stretching as well. i find warming up helps and just doing gentle exercises and waiting for a couple of days between exercising as well

Your body wasn't used to so much activity at once. When getting back into a routine we should approach it slowly, and work our way up. When we over- exercise it slows us down, and we have to take a break to let the muscles rest. A warm bath will help ease the soreness a bit.

I too have tried just about everything. Thing is it all works. You just have to find the one you are comfortable with. Make your plan and work it.My doctor recommends South Beach diet, Slim Fast or Weight Watchers. I agree WW is expensive and terribly time consuming. Slim Fast could be a variation of the fasting I described and South Beach is actually good too. That is low garb, but expensive b/c you eat a lot of meat.
