Concerning Glasgow council tax. Imaging that you live in a 6 bedroom apartment? You were told the apartment is for students before you moved in. You moved in expecting everyone to be eligible for council tax exemption. You paid 66 pounds of your share in the begining expecting it to be refunded once the request for exemption for your apartment has been approved. You realise after a few months that one of the flatmates is a part time student so you cannot get a refund anymore. The whole bill amounts to a little over a thousand pounds for a period of 9 months. The part time says he will pay half of the thousand and the other half will be split by the students. If you were me would you agree to pay the council tax or would you say you will say they can keep the 66 but you will not pay a penny more?

would you not be able to claim directly from the council for your rebate? surely though if there was 6 of you it would not be that much more money to pay i would maybe look into this one other wise i would proberly end up paying it because i wouldnt want to end up in court or in a worse situation ;-(

Nope. The tax is for the property. I understand that if a student is staying with a non student, the non student is the one to pay all the council tax. I've talked to a lot of landlords who rent out rooms only. They always tell me that if other rooms were taken up by non full time students, they are the ones to pay for the tax. Also since not all tenants are working, there is a discount.

As far as I know, if YOU are a full time student then you should at least have a reduction in your share of the council tax unless you are living there as someone elses partner. I would ask for it all to be looked at again and explain that you maybe wouldn't have accepted the room if you had known about their decisions.
