Anyone have any advice on how to potty train my 2 year old effeciently? I've been trying since he was about 18 months off and on becuase he should interest in it...I didn't push him into it though I thought perhaps it'd push him away from trying to learn. My mother in law however doesnt think he really needs to be potty training yet even though he'll be three years old in October. Anyone that can perhaps steer me on to the right path on how to better be efficient in potty training and also how to deal with a mother in law that thinks the only way to do something is her way would be greatly appreciated.

I was able to potty trian my daughter at about the age of two with little problem. My son however, was a different story. It took him until he was 3years and 5 months old before he was potty trained. I tried everything I could. He just showed no interest. I spoke to his doctor several times and was told each time that boys seem to take longer then girls and it is completely normal for them to be older then 2 and still trying to potty train.
Remeber, if potty training is your biggest issue right now, consider yourself lucky. lol
Anyways, to help get my son interested a used a suggestion from his doctor. It's the "pee penny" method. lol
My son loves money so we bought him an extra special piggy bank (other then the one he has always had) and keep it in the bathroom. Everytime he goes #1 or #2 - he gets a "pee penny". Even if he tried for a couple minutes but was unsuccessful, we still considered it a success and rewarded him because we didn't want to discourage him.
It doesn't take much to take a few dollars to the bank for rolls of pennys. Most people have hundreds of these anyways.
It won't work for every kid but it really worked for mine. He loved it. He loved getting to retrieve his "pee penny" and put it in his special bank.
And after a while, we would take his "pee pennys" to the dollar store and let him pick out something. (of course I had to add alittle money).
And after a while, he started to slowly forget about the "pee pennys" and would just go on his own and think nothing of it. So I too would not mention the penny. If he suddenly remembered I played dumb and pretended I forgot and gave him one.
He slowly wiened out of the pennys and now goes without problem.
Good luck!!

I think I will try this idea. I got up this morning and tried to get my little one to sit on the potty and he actually went. It was great, as a reward for now I gave him a penny. He's gone 3 other times already today without having to be forced! now we'll probably go out and get another bank for him but for now the one he has will work. Thank you for the great tip!

I'm not sure about the specifics of potty training, but I know kids in that age group innately mimic their parents. So maybe a useful thing to do would be to sit him on the potty every time you sit on the potty (does he have like a plastic potty or something)? Also, maybe take him to sit down on the potty everytime he poops or pees in the diaper. Not sure, but that's just waht I could come up with.
Good luck!Check out this link:
