Declawing is cruelty

I think that declawing is cruelty for cats. We don´t allow this in Europe but I´ve heard that it's possible to do in USA. People are so lazy to buy cat finger scissors and use them, but why? Perhaps they are too fat to move perhaps?

It absolutely is totally cruel. The rescue group I'm working with to rehome some of my cats turns down potential adopters if they declaw, no more questions asked.

Not all the states in the United States of America allow it anymore. I think it is so cruel to do. I don't think that people should have cats, if they are so concerned with their dumb furniture getting ruined. I have two cats, they are not declawed, and they do not ruin anything. I have boards for them to scratch, and they are very good and easy to train. I wish it was against the law everywhere.

First, thank you for the best response. Second, I am so happy that we all agree. Why people insist on having a cat for a pet and declawing them is so selfish. It really is very painful, and if done wrong, which can happen, may cripple the sweethearts.

I think only way to make pets feel better is to give people right information. First and the most important reason is animal rights. Declawing is hurting pet so it therefore breaks animal rights. Declawing should be described as animal torture.

That´s what I´ve been also trying to tell here. It´s all about training. Our cat first was quite anxious to scratch drapes. Then we realised to tell him not to do so. Some time has passed and it never scratches drapes again. We have a climbing tree but our cat likes more the carpet :)

Theres nothing wrong with declawing a cat. It just like removing due claws from a dog. If the cat is an inside cat I dont see anything wrong with it. Also when the surgery is done the cat is asleep and dosent know what happened. And it DOSNT hurt them to have them removed. Example: What if you had a small child. And a cat who loves to chase him down and scratch him??? I wouldnt get rid of the cat or the child. I would have the claws removed! I dont know I dont see anything wrong with declawing a cat.

Talking about value and respect for animals. Cats don´t kill childs. Please copperkitten read the facts. It hurts cat and yes, it´s also a painful procedure. If you care about animals you must read about how they must be treated. http://www.pawproject.com/html/faqs.asp

they dont just get scissors and cut off the claws. they have to take the cat to the vet and its a surgical procedure. personally..i dont like the whole idea behind declawing either. its like cutting a dogs ears to give it the "mean" look. they say that ppl declaw cats to protect their furniture and drapes i guess. and that cats that are allowed to go outside should never be declawed. but how can anyone know FOR SURE that their cat will NEVER go outside? what if its a total accident and a visitor leaves the door open for just a moment too long and the cat gets out? (most cats are wanting to check out the world outside the windows) if a declawed cat does get out, it has NO DEFENSE against dogs etc. and NO WAY TO ESCAPE either! they cant run up a tree or anything! their only hope is to find a fence low enough for them to jump without the need to "grab" it with their claws..cause they dont have any. i wonder how many declawed cats get killed by dogs when they somehow escape their homes...all due to not having claws. want to hear something worse?? i knew a couple that had their dog "de-barked"!!! i dont know if the vet removes the voicebox or what they do, but that dog cannot bark at all!! and thats tragic!

Personally I think all cats should be indoor cats. If you LOVE your pet you would allow him in the house. Outdoor cats cause trouble, getting into garbage, getting pregnant, and places they shouldnt be. And a declawed cat can get away from a dog if it needs to. They can run and hide under something. Ok getting a dogs bark out is crule!!! I knew someone who adopted a dog like this. The owners couldnt stand the barking and had the voice box taken out. How would they like to have there voice taken away???? Some people just shouldnt have pets!!!

some of people may only think about how confortable they feel and how they furniture looks and not think about animals. There´s nothing good with declawing. Yes, that´s for sure if you want to get a cat forget about how every carpet must look. One can tell cat not to scratch drapes too. Declawing is just like an idea of a desperate housewife who want´s everything to look perfect for other people and feel mentally ill otherwise. Also it´s not good for a pet if you take off something that´s naturally grown and part of it´s body. Cat cannot walk properly if something that balances it´s walk is taken off. I agree also that it cannot escape/defence in dangerous situations if it´s a outside cat.

I think declawing a cat is just plain wrong. It should be banned world wide. I have two indoor cats and sure they do damage with their claws but that is just part of having a cat do what is natural. If I couldn't stand the cats being cats I would never have taken them in.

I agree with you. It´s natural for cats. One can buy a scrathing tree or something but you cannot tell cat what to do. It's all about how you raise the cat when it s a kitten. We allowed our cat to scratch the carpet when it was just a kitty. Now it´s useless to tell him not to do it. Our sofa is safe however. Declawing should be banned worldwide because it´s unnatural. There´s not justice for animals (and neither for kids) in USA.

we bought a cat house for 50 € and our cat didn´t use it at all. My cat only likes the carpet. We must buy a new carpet for living room perhaps every two years :D
