I am only fluent in English, which is my native language.
I have taken a year of French in High School, and another year in college--so I am far from fluent.
I know a few words of Yiddish/German, and Spanish.
And I know about three hundred words of Hebrew, due to my esoteric studies.

The concept of mother tounge is something very unique..its the innate nature of an individual to utter his mothertonge when he learns to speak..
like in bengali we speak ""MA""...its a natural phenomenon.
being a bengali my mother tounge is bengali..
i can speak and understand hindi very well..since english is the most required language i hav manged to speak and write english..but apart from this language is not a barrier and anything is not impossible since i know one of my frends who can speak different types of indian languages.....

I speak two languages. English is my mother tongue, since I am from Canada. But I live in Guatemala where I learned Spanish. With my husband, I speak Spanish and with my sons I speak English so they will grow up with it. My husband speaks Spanish to them.
The baby is only 2 weeks old, so obviously he doesn´t say anything yet, but my 17 month old speaks both English and Spanish, although he speaks more English at the moment because he is with me 24-7. He understands both languages equally. When the boys are older, we are planning to have them take language classes in a third language, but aren´t sure which yet. I would also like to travel with them, so they would pick up other languages around the world.

Hi GuateMom,
Wow thats really nice to hear that your son at a very small age can speak and understand as well both spanish and langauges...Is that the picture of your son in the display??
You seem to be a very caring Mom for your kids...Good work , keep going...thats really good idea that you are planning to teach your kids third language as well...it really helps them to speak fluently and communicate with people when they go to different places.
Good luck and my sweet kisses to your babies....
Bye and keep smiling and have a great day ahead.
Thanks,
Vani.

I'm from the Dominican Republic (island in the Caribbean) so my first language is Spanish. I came to the states when I was about 6 so I learned English then. At home I speak Spanish to my parents since they don't know English that well - they speak it with a very heavy accent. And to my brother and cousins and friends I speak English, so I know both languages about the same, since I use both of them equally as much.

I was raised speaking English and Polish, so I speak both well (though my Polish doesn't have the best accent). I've studied Japanese for 3 years and am fascinated with Japan's culture, so I'd say I am somewhat fluent. I studied classical Latin for 2 years, but I'm better with reading and understanding it than speaking it. I have trouble 'thinking in Latin,' so I'm not very good at it.
