Hostas tend to be shade loving, they'll do best if they're in shade for at least half the day, away from the afternoon heat. They can tolerate some sun, but full sun is probably too much, and there are so many other plants that would prefer to be in the sunny spot!

Hostas will start out well in full sun, but then they die much more quickly than if they were in the shade. I've been digging mine out that were put in the sun because they just don't look pretty very long. They do still come back each year and seem to get bigger, though.

Hostas growing in almost full sun - I planted these hostas several years ago when there was a beautiful white ash growing there. Last summer it got struck by lightning and split the tree down to the ground so had to cut it down. Now they are growing in almost full sun and doing great. They can't be planted in full sun thou cause they are shade-loving plants.
My hostas are growing real good under almost full sun. They have shot up and out alot since I took this pick. In fact, they are starting to send up flower stalks right now. Long as they aren't planted in full sun, they will do just fine as long as you water them.
