My cat has a bad attitude.

I have a male kitten who is about 8 months old. And he has a really bad attitude problem. With it getting hotter lately he lays around on on the floor all spread out. And that I understand but he will bite anyone that comes near he sometimes. Now I'm not going to say he does it all the time but there are times that he is very mean to my kids. My 5 years old Synthia just tried to pick him up and cuddle him and he turned and bite her shoulder. I need to know why he might be doing this. Is there anything I can do to get him to stop? Any help will be appreciated thanks in advance.

Is your kitten neutered? I have a little male who just turned a year old and I have not yet been able to afford to have him neutered. It was a new experience for me, as all of my cats in the past have been fixed young or before we got them. I am no expert, but it seems to affect their demeanor immensely, especially as they get older. 8 months might be a bit young, but my Milo is very independent, and he LOATHES being held or petted unless he is the one to initiate affection.
It may be that he's just a young tom, and therefore, he's not going to be quite as subdued and lovable. Or, as it has been suggested already, he may just be one of those cats who, as an individual, is irascible. But if he hasn't been neutered and you can get him fixed, I recommend it.

Understandable. I've been there. Heck.. I am there =P
Well if you can get him fixed eventually, that might just settle him down a bit.

im sure there will be a lot of people ready to jump on me and tell me why im wrong but in my experience a cat will determine his or her role in the family. My cat Guinness is in charge of the rodent controle and foraging departments. Seriously, cats can be jealous. If the child was born after you had the cat, it will react with jealousy to the child. By the sound of it, there might not be a lot you can do but as long as the child isnt hurt its good to let them sort it out for themselves

I have one cat with a bad attitude. I have just learned to leave him alone. And I tell everyone else who may come in contact with him not to touch him unless he comes to you. But I don't have little kids around so I see where this would be a problem for you. I would try the squirt bottle like someone else suggested. It could be that he is just hot and doesn't want to be bothered.

My male cat, started acted like that around the same age, and he screamed all night long. He was super aggressive and a biter.
But, then we got him a companion, a female kitten and he stopped it. Course, then we had to get him fixxed, and that calmed his bad attitude down too.
He still doesn't like to be picked up certain people. So, I'm always having to remind my daughter to leave him alone. But, now he seems to tolerate kids at least.
I'm his mom, so he puts up with me picking him up.
One more thing. We have the same breed of cat, from what I can tell by the picture (gray with stripes) and mine is super picky about his litter.
If it's not cleaned everyday he gets aggressive and surly.
One time he used the bathroom under the bed (and I didn't know about it right away) and he would bite my foot everytime I came out of the bedroom.
This behavior didn't stop until I found the cat stuff under the bed and cleaned it up.
Maybe your cat has done his business in the closet somewhere, and this is his way of warning everyone.
Best of luck with your cat and kids.

Well contrary to what some people believe you really can train a cat similarly to the way you train a dog. My cat use to play bite too hard and I taught him to stop by yelling "Ow" when he bit to hard and then holding his mouth shut and telling him "No" the same as I would with a puppy. However, that is my current cat. I also had a cat a few years ago with a roommate (the cat stayed with her when I moved necause she had spent more money on her vet bills then I had) and she was just a mean cat, she would pick out people that she didn't like for no reason and pick on them. She never bit anyone hard enough to draw blood but there was one guy that would visit us and whenever he cam eover she would go over to his shoes, meow to mae sure he was looking, and then just start clawing the hell out of them, and no matter how many times we chased her away from them she would keep coming back and doing it again. She also jumped on the back of the chair that my roommate was sitting in one eveing and clawed her across the forehead for absolutly no reason, so just like people, some cats are just mean. Also some cats really hate being picked up. My parents had a cat like that.

Well that's all it really took with my cat Smokey, but we do have a dog that is 6 years old, we had her long before we got the cat, and she reacts to the word "OW" so he may have learned it from her and not me, but if I yell ow he runs off, or at least stops what he is doing, he doesn't claw intentionally not but sometimes he'll be kneading the blanket on ym bed and he'll poke my hand or something by accident, and telling him "Ow" seems to make him be a little more careful.

Cats have a mind of their own...I got 2
One of them doesn't like to be carried, patting her is ok but try carrying her and claws will talk...
The other one is close to only certain members of the family, but she doesn't like to be touched on her back, she will immidiately turn around and scratch you.
I just don't understand cats. but they grow on you don't they?

I love my Fuzzykins I just hate when he bite my kids. I wonder if getting a squirt bottle and squirting him with water when he does that will help.

i think getting as squirt bottle is a great idea, it really should help the cat associate biting with a nasty shock, therefore extinguishing the behaviour, with a bit of luck, anyway
blessed be

Well the cat is still young..so hopefully it will change. I would just try to discipline him when he does that. My cat gets like that at time too...she will just bite me for no reason...I don't know if they are playing or what...lol?

thats too bad! sometimes kittens can be too playful, maybe he will grow out of it eventually. desexing or spaying usually helps a male cat to calm down and also stops them from roaming around at night and from spraying everything in sight

I had a male cat like that. The vet thought it was because he was born a "barn cat" and never really got it out of his system. I tried to give him away one time and he ran away from those folks and came back to my house about five miles away!I eventually had to give him away to a farmer and he just loved it there! He was the best barn mouser they had and I was told they wished they had about 10 more just like him. His only problem was he was also used to coming in the house and he would beg the farmer's son to let him inside. One day he just disappeared and they figure that he because wolf food. I was sad to hear it and I would have loved to keep him, but a cat with a bad attitude just doesn't belong in a house. If you are unhappy, then so is he and perhaps you should think about giving him away.

it depends on the cat's mood, try to observe your cat, sometimes they bite because they are on their "defense mode".. meaning if your cats felt an air of hostility towards him/her, he would attack as means of defending himself/herself. biting could also mean he's just playing, and alot of cats tend to bite just playing around. Maybe your cat felt a little aggravated, did your daughter squeezed him a little bit?
If your cat is always being like this, in my opinion, he just wants alot of your attention. sometimes cats dislikes the other thing that takes away your attention from them, for example, your kids, especially if he's grown to be more affectionate towards you
