We have ours in a wooden box that my husband built for him =) It has plexiglass on the front and back so we can always see him, and we have a "pool" of water in there for him, it is a bih bowl thingy we got at the pet store. We have his pellet food in there but we take him out and put him in a plastic container when we feed him the worms =) I will fill up our bathroom sink with water and let him swim around in there, we don't keep him in water all the time though. Sometimes my kids take him into the bathtub with them, they love watching him swim around!!

Howdy!
I would like to suggest one thing if I may.
Give the little guy lots of raw hamburger and occassionally lace it with a drop of Vitamin E if you can. Also Vitamin D.
Turles in the wild get lots of sunlight, which has Vitamin D in particular, and in captivity they don't find this vitamin outside of their food sources. Of course if you let him walk around in the backyard on a sunny, warm day, it will help him not only vitamin-wise, but also he will benefit from the exercise.
Remember that in the wild, turtles have alot of freedom to explore and swim, so it is best to try and duplicate these elements as best you can in your own home environment. Like cats and dogs, turtles are curious, intelligent and can learn simple things from cues. I once had a turlte who came running everytime he heard the electric can opener! :)
Hope this helps.
All the best

So that's what type of turtle I have. lol I found mine outside at my door step about a year ago. One of his feet is a club foot and both his eyes at the time were in bad shape. Now he only has one eye as I was only able to save one. I have him in a large aquarium with a small, shallow water container, a hide away box, a light, and the grass carpet under him. I am going to put him in a large wooden box and line it with turf grass with his light, small water container, and I am going to build him a bigger hide away box. What do you feed yours? Mine will only eat water turtle pellets.

Hi, How you doing?
I must say that I don't actually know the answers to yoru question but my advice to you is to go to your local pet store and ask them cos they have everything on hand as well you can really see what they mean.
I was really just wondering though how you found it and where? That's pretty cool that you managed to adopt him and you are going to look after him. Have you given the wee fella a name yet?
Speak soon,

I have had a box turtle in my yard for several years. I have a small enclosed yard with a pool and he seems to be quite contented out there. He hibernates in the winter and every year he emerges in the spring covered in mud. He has eaten all the slugs in my yard and I don't miss them

O my...since this was posted 6 months ago I hope you have discoved the best way to take care of your little guy!
I have had many box and other turtles and have had alot of experience with their ups and downs. Generally speaking tortoises are much less hardy in a domestic environment then box turtles, so you are lucky to have a box and not say an African tortoise, which only thrives in hot, semi-tropical enviroments.
The box turtle you have SHOULD eat anything! Really! Even cat food and all types of fruits and some vegetables. A really balanced diet would include all of the above. Each box has his or her own preclivities, however, so you must discover what yours likes best.
Box turtles, by the way are among the MOST INTELLIGENT of all turtles. Only the Eastern Wood turtle (a semi-swamp loving fellow) is thought to have the "higer turtle I.Q." :)
Hope this helps!
All the best.

I have a box turtle too. We have him in a 20 gallon tank. We use crushed walnut shells for bedding. {buy at any pet store} Its very good stuff, smells good and they like it. Also he need a light. Ask at the pet store and they will tell you what kind. Also we have a big bowl of water in there for him. He eats romaine lettuse, carrots, apples, green beans, crickets, and turtle sticks. Feed a little each day preferably at night time. There more active then. Also a Turtle bone is a good idea as well. It helps keep there beaks from growing to long. We also take him outside and let him run around. Its also a good idea to mist him once a day and put him in a bath 2-3 times a week. It keeps there skin moist, and they enjoy it. Dont cover him in water. make sure he has his head above the water. Cant think of anything else right now. Any more questions please feel free to ask!! Thanx!
