Has anyone found any OTC allergy medications that really make a difference? I would really appreciate knowing what works for you and which sysmptoms it treats. I have itchy, watery eyes, a scratchy throat and am prone to sinus infections easily because of mine. Thanks.

I've suffered with allergies pretty much my entire life. When I was younger I used sudafed almost exclusively, but there are much better things on the market now. What I have been using for the last five or so years is claritin. I used to take it when it was perscription only, but now that it's over the counter, it is much cheaper and very effective. You only need to take one pill a day, and it is very inexpensive if you buy the generic version in bulk from a place like Sam's Club, or Costco. A three month supply is about $6. The really nice thing about claratin is that there are no side effects. One does not get drowsey or even realize they are taking medication except for the fact that your allergy symptoms are lessened or non-existant.

I used to take Zyrtec, I didn't have any side effects and it did work well. For prescription meds I found the real flonase also works well but the generic one is a waste.

The best OTC I ever found was by Comtrex. It was their Allergy/Sinus one. It was a god send for me. It really helped. Failing that I used alka seltzer sinus medication. I hope they have one or the other in your area for you and that it helps. Trust me I know how miserable they are.

Great suggestions. They're both national brands so I should be able to find them. Next time I go out I'll look. Thank you.

You're quite welcome. The Comtrex especially worked really great but it's hard to find the allergy/sinus one at least around here.

Sounds like you have an allerigy. Have you tried Benadril. It has helped me some times.

I use benadryl or chlortrimeton. Benedryl has an ingrediant in it that may make your allergies worse for 40 - 60 minutes before the antihistamine in it can really take effect. Chlortrimeton is a little yellow pill and you only need to take 1 every 6 hours. It takes about 40 - 60 minutes before it is really effective too; but, it doesn't make your allergies worse first. Both are available as generics and they are very inexpensive. My doctor used to prescribe them for my before they became available OTC.

Thanks for sharing this. I'm unfamiliar with Chlortrimeton - I'll have to look for it.

I've found that Benedryl is a godsend. I get seasonal allergies for like 50% of the year, adn I always take Benedryl for them. They seem to pretty much take care of all the symptoms. Just make sure you take one as soon as you wake up in the morning instead of waiting until you're dying of itchy watery eyes! lol

HI i am allergic to dust ...and I live in Saudi Arabia!!...It has something to do with the fact ACs recycle air with tiny dust particles or something ...Im not sure ..whenever there is a sand storm I have trouble breathing ..first stuffy nose then face swells ups etc etc ..for that Zyrtec works really well for me.
