Today 31st May is Vesak Day. It is a public holiday celebrated by buddhists in Singapore to commemorate Buddha's birthday. I understand that this occasion is celebrated worldwide. I'm not a buddhist, so it is a holiday for me to rest. Do you have such a public holiday in your own country?

You may not be having a holiday today, but there are also other hols in USA that we don't have in Singapore. Btw, why are you living there? You are there for studies or work? Well, at least nowadays, you can still get lots of info about your home country through the internet as well as webcasts that are available.

Reason being my husband is working in US, so the children and myself decided to fly there so to united together as a family. My parent and in-law persuade me to give up my career in Singapore. Now I am paranoid over children education. The primary school education is slower than Singapore as it is taught in different way. Here is more creative and independent. Thus, my poor children had to learn both countries education syllabus. As we will be returned to our favorite country Singapore. Though Singapore is a FINE place but it is a NICE place.

Hello dear lexus. We always have a holiday on May 1st, which is a national-given holiday. We used to have a five-day holiday on May holiday, but next year, namely 2008, we would not have that special five days' holiday, but one day. I don't like the change of the May holiday like many other people do. Thanks, dear friend, for your old discussion.

Hello again, dear lexus. This New Year's Day we are given a two-day holiday by the country, but in fact our school has offered us five days rest because we work for ten days straight before we have four days rest and as it is new year's day, we have got five days rest from Dec 31st to January 4th. I am happy that I am feeling relaxed. But I am sorry that you don't have enough holidays, which is unfair to you. Anyway, I wish you happy from the beginning of the year to always.

Hello William, thanks for your feedback. I'm certainly envious of your 5-day holiday for May Day that you used to get. All our national holidays here in Singapore are 1 day only, except for Chinese New Year which is 2 days. We are a workaholic nation and we don't have that many public holidays a year compared to some countries. But nowadays, many people work a 5-day week, so that in a way gives people more breaks from work.
Speaking of public holidays, today is the start of the new year 2008, and I wish you and your loved ones a very and blessed Happy New Year.
