It has gotten so that I don't even want to watch the news or read the paper

This morning while having my cup of coffee and reading the newspaper, I found myself disgusted. It seems that almost everyday we are hearing about parents that have killed their children. One article talks about a woman that was found bleeding, and authorities thought she had a miscarriage, at first she denied being pregnant, but later admitted that she had indeed delivered a baby. She refused to give any information where the newborn was at. When the police and paramedics went to her home, they found the newborn in a tied up garbage bag in a closet, unresponsive but warm. They proceeded to perform CPR and the baby was resuscitated him. Now, I would never condone anyone doing this to a newborn, but come on this woman was not a teenage girl afraid that mom and dad would find out, besides our city has a policy that allows women ( I am sorry I cannot call them mothers) to drop off newborns at local fire departments or hospitals and never be questioned or charged with child abandonment.
The next story talks about a young girl that was strangled to death by her father. The poor mother who is recovering from a recent stroke, could do nothing but watch and scream as her husband killed their daughter! Could you imagine?! And if this isn't bad enough, the girl was adopted!
Then just this week, we heard about the mother in Texas ( again) that killed her children by hanging them in a closet.
As a mother, I just cannot imagine what drives people to kill their own kids or abandon them. I mean really, sometimes life can get rough, but to kill your children?! I am so sick of hearing that these people have " mental illness" ( not taking away from those that do) but I wonder is this defense being overused? Mothers killing their children have in the past used postpartum depression to explain away their crime, what are fathers going to use?

I hardy watch the news and I haven't for years. It isn't because I'm apathetic, it's because the things going on are so disturbing. I just do my best to keep the things that I can control as positive as they can be.
Sometimes not watching the news is not a good thing though. I feel a bit guilty sometimes and also uniformed.

I have given up the newspaper. It is full of nothing but bad things all the time. I watch the news, but only because I feel I need to know what is going on. Truthfully I think people are just going crazy!! I can't imagine getting to a point that I could kill my own child.

I have been in very rough situations where stress and my children were concerned. I reach out to others and plainly state that I just can't take it and I'm about to snap. Sometimes it's helpful and other times I feel like no one cares. I'm sure some people experience only the ladder part of that. I can sort of understand where sometimes things tend to get a little out of hand. But like you, I don't understand all the brutality. To be honest, if I felt I was that out of control....I'd rather try to send my child to a relative to give us both a break. Sometimes that's not possible. If I started having thoughts of things that others have carried out, I'd rather give my child up than harm him. I don't think I'd be able to live with myself, but I would hope I could have the right mind to do something before acting so harsh. I'm not sure if the mental illness is overused or not. I do know that there's more cases of severe depression than we would like to believe.

I agree I dont like to see or read the news anymore as that all that you see and hear about,I just dont understand how a mother or a father could harm there children. I also think that they have allowed the people to use mental illness for just about anything and it is nothing but a copout as people say well I can kill so ans so and say mental illness. I dont understand how one can claim they didnt know what they were doing when they killd ther children. Our court system here in the US is just to soft on crime so these things will continue.
