it's basically due to the lack of education from families and schools, as well as lack of job opportunities for the poor.
i studied in a school where recycling was encouraged and enforced. in our home, my parents taught us to value the environment. we had a vegetable patch and a flower garden; we also had a biodegradable "hole" in our backyard. until this day, i always make it a point to sort our garbage. i know it's a gross chore, but someone has got to do it. we should start teaching our children and becoming examples to the little ones.

Well, humans are born with this drive to have it all, and they are selfish, and greedy by nature. It is only when one decides to change that about themselves that they stop being this way. So, humans always want more, more, more. And to be as comfortable as possible. So, unfortunately some do not want to or just do not change this about themselves and realize there is a world out there beyond themselves.
